Does Donovan Mitchell Make Cleveland Contenders? Cavaliers Are NBA Long Shots In 2022-2023
The Cleveland Cavaliers have reportedly agreed to a blockbuster trade with the Utah Jazz, giving up a haul of draft picks and guard Collin Sexton in exchange for Donovan Mitchell. The deal has created a surge of optimism surrounding the Cavs for the 2022-2023 NBA season.
The addition of Mitchell improves what was already one of the NBA's best core of young players. The Cavaliers will enter the season with four All-Star-caliber players, none of whom are older than 26 years old.
The future is bright in Cleveland, but what about the team's short-term prospects? Can the Cavaliers contend for a championship right away?
Following the Mitchell trade, the Cavaliers are still relative long shots to win next year's title. Cleveland has +3300 odds for the 2023 NBA Finals at FanDuel Sportsbook. A dozen teams are given better odds than the Cavaliers to win the championship.
Cleveland isn't particularly close to being considered one of the league's best teams. The Boston Celtics, Milwaukee Bucks, and Brooklyn Nets make up the Eastern Conference's top tier of contenders. All three teams are led by superstars and have no worse than +700 championship odds.
Mitchell has made three straight All-Star teams. The guard averaged 28.3 points per game in his playoff career with Utah. Mitchell isn't close to being on the level of Giannis Antetokounmpo or Kevin Durant. Jayson Tatum is on a tier ahead of Mitchell after finishing sixth in the NBA MVP voting and coming two wins shy of being the best player on a championship team.
There's still significant separation between Cleveland and the second tier of East contenders. The Cavaliers are given nearly half the chance to win the 2023 NBA Finals as the Philadelphia 76ers (+1700) and Miami Heat (+1800).
The Cavaliers finished the 2021-2022 regular season as one of the East's top 10 seeds. Cleveland was eliminated in the play-in tournament.
The upcoming season might be considered a success if Cleveland wins a playoff series. The team should expect to make the postseason, at the very least.
Darius Garland and Jarrett Allen both represented the Cavs in the 2022 All-Star Game. At just 22 years old, Garland led Cleveland with 21.7 points, 8.6 assists, and 1.3 steals per game. Allen was a defensive stalwart with averages of 16.0 points and 10.8 rebounds per game.
Evan Mobley has the highest ceiling of any player on the team. The No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft averaged 15.0 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game as a rookie. Mobley could become a perennial All-Star and one of the top big men of his generation.
Mobley and Allen anchored a top-five defense last season. Cleveland's 20th ranked offense kept it from making the playoffs. The Cavs hope that Mitchell, one of the NBA's best scorers, can improve the team's biggest weakness, while Cleveland's young frontcourt continues to dominate on the defensive end.
The Cavs have +1800 odds to win the East and +360 odds to win the Central Division.
