Does Kate Die In ‘Last Christmas’? Find Out If It’s A Sad Movie
Some people need to know if they’re heading into a sad movie, and lots of people have speculated that “Last Christmas” might actually be a tearjerker disguised as a romantic comedy. “Last Christmas,” starring Emilia Clarke, has a couple of moderately sad scenes but, overall, is not a sad movie. If you need to know more details, we’ll have to get into some major spoilers.
To be clear, the “Game of Thrones” actress would rather fans see the movie for themselves. “It’s bloody annoying. Frustrating,” Clarke told IndieWire. “It’s more complicated than people are guessing.”
But if you’re still here, you want the ending spoiled. There is only one really sad part of the movie. It turns out that the lyrics, “Last Christmas, I gave you my heart,” are interpreted very literally in the movie, which was penned by Emma Thompson.
“Last Christmas” follows Clarke’s Kate/Katarina, a heart transplant recipient who is struggling. Her career is stalling, she’s become self-involved, she continually loses her housing and irritates those who love her enough to give her shelter, not to mention that she isn’t even taking care of her body and new heart. Then, she meets Tom (Henry Golding).
Tom is a good guy. He volunteers at the homeless shelter and has opted not to have a cell phone in order to be more present. Slowly, their relationship seems to make Kate start behaving better. She stops drinking all the time, starts eating healthy, makes amends with friends and family and even starts volunteering at the homeless shelter. Then, she learns that Tom doesn’t exist. Tom is, in fact, a ghost.
Yes, fans have been speculating that Tom is a ghost since the trailer came out, and it’s true. A flashback shows him getting hit while riding his bike, but he has a donor card on him. The scene shows a scared Kate in the same hospital on her way to get a new heart.
Kate sees him one more time after realizing he is a ghost to confront him to ask why and how he is here.
To get those answers, you’ll have to watch the movie. Though it’s obviously not the happily ever after that romantic comedy fans might expect, the flick still ends on a very upbeat note.
“Last Christmas” is in theaters now.
