Queen Elizabeth II received an engagement ring from Prince Philip before their wedding.

On the online forum site Quora, royal fans are wondering if Her Majesty still wears the stunning piece of jewelry until today. Majority of the respondents said that the monarch still wears her engagement ring even though she’s already been married to the Duke of Edinburgh for over seven decades.

Sue McCune Martin, who was studied and read about the royal family, said that Prince Philip depended mostly on his salary from the navy when he bought the engagement ring for his wife.

“Finding enough money to buy a ring worthy of a princess was going to be a stretch for him. His mother, Princess Alice, had kept at least one tiara from her days as Greek royalty,” she said.

However, Maria Lynn said that she thinks the Queen no longer wears her engagement ring today because it might no longer fit her.

“Whether or not Elizabeth still wears it or not is immaterial… maybe the ring is too small now, after all, she was quite slender when she married Philip at 21 and gained a lot of weight at one time; she soon lost it because the public said she was looking too matronly for such a young age,” she said.

But Jacquie Black, a former executive director, said that the Queen actually still wears her engagement ring today. She also said the diamonds featured on the Queen’s ring came from Prince Philip’s mom’s beautiful diamond bracelet.

According to Town & Country, Prince Philip’s family also sacrificed a lot so that he could give the Queen a beautiful ring. Princess Alice offered to give the diamonds on her tiara so that they could be used for the ring. The Duke of Edinburgh accepted his mom’s precious gift, and he also teamed up with jewelers Philip Antrobus Ltd., to design the ring.

Prince Philip and the Queen announced their engagement on July 10, 1947.
