A “lovable” dog was beaten to death and cooked for dinner a few hours after it was adopted from an animal shelter in Russia by a couple, local media reported Wednesday.

The unidentified couple arrived at the shelter home last week and said they were looking to adopt a stray dog. A few minutes later, the dog, a stray mongrel, ran up to them. They told the staff that they had “fallen in love” with the canine named Nika and convinced them that they would take care of it. They then took the dog home.

The same evening, one of the staff members arrived at the couple’s home to check on the canine. As soon as the staff members entered the property, she could smell cooked meat.

Speaking to local media Wednesday, Volunteer Ekaterina Valyus said, “When I arrived, I smelled fried meat.” She then found the remains of Nika in the porch and the rest of the body “on the stove.”

When Valyus confronted the wife about the same, she denied killing the canine. An unconvinced Valyus immediately reported the incident to the police. Officers arrived at the home and took the women into custody and during interrogation, the wife confessed to the crime and said she first beat the canine to death with an iron rod before cooking it.

Speaking about the incident, dog shelter director Irina Savitskaya said, the woman “took the dog, and ate her new pet that very evening. She has admitted that she had butchered the dog and ate it. She just says, ‘no-one will put me in jail over a dog.’” Savitskaya is now demanding a prison sentence for the accused.
