Dog Being Attacked By Pit Bull Saved By Stranger Driving By
A good Samaritan was hailed as hero after he saved a police officer's dog from being attacked by a pit bull. The incident took place in Lynn, Massachusetts, on Friday.
Timothy Furlong, a Nahant police officer, was on duty when he received a call from his 11-year-old son saying that their family’s dog, a German shepherd named Lucy, was being attacked by another dog near their home. Furlong rushed to the scene and was relieved to find out that a stranger had rescued the dog. While Lucy was out for a walk with Furlong’s son, daughter and his wife, the pit bull escaped from a nearby home.
O.P. Miller, a fantasy writer, said he was on his way to the gym when he saw the pit bull attacking the dog. He immediately got out of the car and intervened.
“I could hear a young girl screaming bloody murder. When I got up to corner, I locked eyes with (the girl) and could see the tears pouring down her face. I spun around and rushed out and grabbed the dog. They were both on their hind legs. I grabbed on his collar. I was hitting him, scratching him and poking him. He was locked on good,” Miller said, adding the pit bull let go of the German shepherd after he started twisting on its collar as it started choking, Boston 25 News reported.
Furlong said he and his family were grateful to Miller for saving their dog’s life.
“We put ourselves in danger as police officers to help people, to have people do that for your own family, it’s overwhelming," he said.
Furlong added that no one else was willing to take the risk.
"The thing that bothered me the most, I was told my son was trying to wave down passing vehicles and it took several cars to pass before this one gentleman stopped. It's heartbreaking to think about a young boy waving his arms asking for help and no one helped,” Furlong said.
While the German shepherd did not sustain major injuries, the whereabouts of the pit bull was not known. Furlong said he was planning to officially honor Miller for his actions.
