Youngstown -- A bloodied and injured dog is on the road to recovery in Ohio after being chained to a car and dragged for 100 yards.

The dog named Oreo was rescued Sunday and is now being looked after by the Animal Charity of Ohio.

The abuse came to light after the Youngstown Police Department responded to a phone call from a witness on the east side of the town. Witnesses revealed that the black and white female dog was chained to a car and mercilessly dragged down, according to the Kansas City Star.

“According to eyewitnesses, Oreo was being dragged behind a car that was going approximately 35 miles per hour,” the animal rescue group wrote on Facebook. The dog was later chained in a backyard.

Oreo was found with all her nails missing on one foot. She also had severe abrasions on her limbs, stomach and chin.

A picture shared by the animal charity showed spots of blood that were left on the road from the alleged abuse.

“After being through such a horrifying experience, she was so thankful to be in the arms of our humane agent,” the Facebook post said.

Oreo received medical attention and had her wounds cleaned. She was found to have at least two broken toes on each paw, according to an update from the animal rescue group.

“Despite the horrific abuse Oreo just endured she is still wagging her tail and wants to be held. We will continue to monitor throughout the day, she is resting comfortably right now with pain medication and antibiotics on board,” the Facebook post continued.

The Youngstown Police Department confirmed to 21 News that a humane agent is investigating the case. Charges are likely to be filed in due course.

Netizens were thankful to hear that Oreo was in safe hands following the rescue.

“This makes me physically sick, how could anyone do this to an animal,” said one comment while another added, “Praying for Oreo. What a Sweet and Precious Girl.
