In a horrific case of animal cruelty, a dog in India died after it was tied to a motorbike and dragged along a road by two women.

The CCTV footage of the incident, which is doing the rounds on social media, shows the two women tying the stray dog to a motorbike and dragging the canine, media outlet India Today reported.

The police said when a few children stopped the women, they left the vehicle and fled the scene. The incident took in the northern state of Punjab on June 20, and the canine succumbed to injuries on June 24. The police registered a case of animal cruelty after receiving a complaint from Chopaya Jeev Rakha Foundation, an animal rights organization, DNA India reported.

Authorities are now seeking public help in identifying women in the video.

"This is a shocking incident. We have already pressed our volunteers into service for identifying both women. Prize money has also been announced for helping in apprehending the suspects," a member of the animal rights organization said, Tribune India reported.

Search teams have been formed to find the suspects; however, no arrests have been made in connection with the incident as of Monday morning.

"We have registered the case. The investigations are underway. We are trying to identify the owner of the vehicle. Besides, teams are searching for the suspects in the area where the incident took place," a police officer said.

In March, the Indian government proposed an amendment to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 to increase the penalties against animal cruelty from INR 50 ($0.67) to INR 75,000 ($1,010) besides up to five years’ imprisonment.

Last year, a stray dog died after two men tied it to their motorbike and dragged it for about two miles in the Indian city of Ghaziabad. Passersby stopped the two and caught one of them, while the other fled the scene. The dog was rushed to an animal center where it succumbed to injuries the same day. Both the men were eventually arrested and during interrogation, they said they decided to teach the canine a lesson as it had bitten several people.
