A woman in Hilliard, Florida, was arrested Wednesday (May 27) after a dog was found with an arrow shot through the skull.

A Nassau County Animal Services investigator responded to Hilliard around 2 a.m. on May 16 after receiving a report stating that a canine was found with an arrow piercing its forehead. The Labrador mix was rushed to an emergency veterinary service where it underwent emergency surgery. The arrow was removed.

Meanwhile, after receiving an anonymous tip, deputies arrived at the accused, 37-year-old Carey Marie Wilson’s home May 27. During interrogation, she confessed to shooting the canine with a crossbow after it urinated on her car tire. Following the confession, she was taken into custody for felony animal cruelty. She was released on bail.

Speaking to Action News Jax, the accused said the canine used to enter her fenced-in yard and kill her animals. Also, the dog, allegedly, pounced at her daughter who has mobility issues.

“The dog doesn’t want to leave, so I grabbed a crossbow, my intentions were not to kill the dog, but to try to get the message across, ‘Get out the yard,” Wilson claimed.

The arrest report stated that “the dog was in the yard peeing on her car tire” and “was not being aggressive.”

Admitting that she shouldn’t have shot the canine, Wilson said: “It was extreme. I wish there was a different outcome.”

In a Facebook post, the Nassau County Animal Services said the four-year-old dog, nicknamed Unicorn, “that was shot in the head with a 16” crossbow arrow,” is already recuperating.

“Unicorn is recovering at the shelter. Once Unicorn is cleared by the veterinarian, we will be accepting foster applications,” the Facebook post read.

The agency added that the dog has heartworms.

“If you foster a dog with heartworm disease, we provide the medication and tests, once the heartworm test is negative, should you decide to adopt, we waive the adoption fee. Please let all your friends know about the gentle dog,” the Facebook post added.
