Dog Owner Walks Off After Pet ‘Rips Open’ Another Canine’s Tail
A pet dog was left with serious injuries after it was attacked by another unleased canine in Chicago last week.
Speaking to CBS Local, Debra Dunn said she was walking her 10-year-old miniature dachshund, named Molly, when she noticed a man with his dog off the leash. The unleashed dog started attacking Molly and “ripped her tail open. “
“When I looked back, the dog was running toward me and my dog full throttle. The dog jumped, bit Molly’s tail and her haunches, and bit my hand,” Dunn said.
Dunn added that the dog’s owner did not make an effort to catch the canine while it was attacking them. A while later, he put his dog on leash and walked away. When she stopped the man, “He was like, ‘What’s the matter with you? Why are you upset?’ And I was like, ‘I’m upset because your dog just attacked my dog and me.”
Dunn followed the man but returned when she realized her dog was bleeding profusely. She rushed the canine to a nearby animal hospital where Molly received stitches to the tail.
Dunn then filed a police complaint and asked their help to find the man. Meanwhile, she spent $600 on veterinary bills.
“The vet said if the tail doesn’t heal properly, they’ll have to take most of her tail off,” Dunn said, adding that she was worried about other dogs in the neighborhood.
In Chicago, walking a canine without a leash is not legal and in case an unleased canine attacks someone, the owner could face fine up to $10,000.
