Dog Parent Hospitalized After Pet Chihuahua Defecates On Face While Asleep
A British woman's afternoon nap sent her to the hospital with a gastrointestinal infection after her daughter's dog defecated on her face.
Amanda Gommo, 51, said she fell asleep with the chihuahua, Belle, in her bed and woke up to find the pooch had fallen sick.
"I was having my afternoon nap with Belle, like I always do, when I suddenly felt something squirt in my mouth," the mother-of-three from Bristol told South West News Service, the New York Post reported Monday.
Gommo rushed to the bathroom to find that her son was in the shower. So she took a "quick nap" of herself before cleaning herself off, the mother said.
"It was disgusting, and I was hurling violently for hours after. I just couldn't get the taste out of my mouth," she added.
Gommo's daughter took Belle for a trip to the vet and found out that the chihuahua had a nasty stomach bug.
While Belle was put on antibiotics, Gommo began displaying similar symptoms later that day and decided to get herself checked at the hospital.
She was eventually sent home with a prescription for painkillers to treat her stomach cramps and was told to drink plenty of fluids.
However, Gommo found no respite as her condition worsened over the next two days.
"The cramps got worse and worse until I could feel them all over my body - even in my legs. They sent an ambulance the second time, and I was so dehydrated from being sick and having diarrhea that my kidneys had shriveled to half their size," Gommo recalled.
The woman, who also suffers from Crohn's disease, was reportedly hospitalized and kept under observation for three days. She was treated for dehydration and diagnosed with a gastrointestinal infection.
"I was kept in hospital for three days until they'd flushed the infection out through a drip," she continued. "My discharge note said that I'd suffered a gastrointestinal infection caused by a dog defecating in my mouth - something doctors had never witnessed before."
Gommo said she couldn't eat anything "from the moment I got ill to when I was put on the drip."
The mother said she's been drinking a lot of water and fluids since the incident and is bouncing back.
"I'm happy to say both me and Belle are on the mend," Gommo said, as quoted by Derbyshire Live.
"I've forgiven Belle for her little accident and I still love her with all my heart, but I will definitely be more mindful of what position we sleep in in the future!" she added.
