In a horrific incident, a newborn girl was mauled to death by stray dogs days after her birth. The baby was delivered in an open place in a village in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.

Local media reported Wednesday that a local resident noticed a dog roaming the streets with the body of an infant in its mouth. The villager raised an alarm. The dog immediately left the body on the road and fled.

Police arrived at the spot and took the baby's body to a government hospital.

Samisragudem Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) M. Asha Rohini said the incident occurred four days ago, adding that a case was registered and an investigation was going on.

"We noticed blood stained clothes at the spot, and the baby girl was found dead. Police, Anganwadi teacher, ayah and the woman protection secretary are enquiring into the incident," Rohini told local daily The Hindu on Wednesday.

Women Development and Child Welfare (WD&CW) West Godavari district Project Director K. Vijaya Kumari said they were trying to locate the child's mother. Authorities urged the public to come forward with any information that can help find the child's family.

In a recent incident, a 9-year-old boy in India was mauled to death by a pack of stray dogs while he was playing with his friends. Authorities said the boy was flying kite along with two other friends when dogs attacked the children.

"While the rest of the children managed to escape from the spot, Ayaan could not. The dogs chased him around for a while before attacking him. The boy was injured and died on the spot," A Narsimha Rao, a police officer, told local media, at the time.

By the time authorities arrived, the boy was already dead. The body of the victim was sent to a local hospital for an autopsy. The dogs reportedly bit the child's neck and other parts of the body.
