Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA), one of president Donald Trump's most visible and vocal critics, adamantly denies he farted out loud in a live TV interview. Never one to pass-up on the misfortunes of his foes, Donald Trump Jr. ridiculed Swalwell for this biological faux pas using the hashtag "#fartgate."

The latest tiff between Swalwell and Don Jr. was triggered by an interview of the senator Monday night with MSNBC host Chris Matthews. In answer to a question by Matthews, Swalwell replied "Chris, so far the evidence is uncontradicted that the president used taxpayer dollars to ask the Ukrainians to help him cheat ...," followed by what sounded like a loud rip. Unflustered, Swalwell kept on talking as if nothing happened.

Don Jr. obviously loved it, tweeting, "Most intelligible thing to come out of Swalwell in years. #fartgate."

Don Jr. retweeted a twitter video from Ryan Saavedra, a reporter for The Daily Wire, a right-wing, conservative news and opinion website. Saavedra tweeted, "Eric Swalwell appears to drop a massive fart during live on television. Turn the sound on, this is real."

Swalwell put on a brave face despite the foul fiasco.

"It was not me!!!!" he said in a text message. "Ha. And I didn't hear it when I was speaking. It was funny tho."

Conservatives loved Swalwell's malodorous mishap, as can be gleaned from the humorous and sometimes downright ugly tweets about it. Some not so foul right-wing tweets to #fartgate:

"When you're full of Schiff, it's bound to happen," a user commented.

"The real whistleblower," another said.

"Think he just Schiff himself."

Swalwell announced his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination in April but later dropped out. He's a member of the Judiciary Committee also investigating the impeachment of Trump Sr. and a member of the House's Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.
