Donald Trump's Approval Rating Close To All-Time Low As Impeachment Betting Odds Soar

President Donald Trump’s approval rating continues to plummet amid ongoing investigations into his administration's alleged ties to Russia and his controversial decision to pull the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement. As of Tuesday, a daily Gallup poll saw the president’s approval rating hovering at 38 percent — up two points from the weekend but still close to Trump’s all-time low of 35 percent in March. Impeachment betting odds, meanwhile, are at a record high.

The betting website Predictit, which bills itself as “a stock market for politics,” saw record bets on the president's impeachment in May. A single contract named “Will Donald Trump be Impeached In 2017?” saw more than 100,000 bets in the 24 hours following reports that Trump had fired former FBI Director James Comey.

The latest poll findings — based on telephone interviews with roughly 1,500 American adults — follow a Monday report that the president’s approval rating had dipped below the percentage of voters who want Congress to impeach him. According to a Politico/Morning Consult poll conducted at the end of May and published last week, 43 percent of American voters want Congress to begin the impeachment process even if, as Politico reported, they don’t believe he’s responsible for “high crimes and misdemeanors.”

“If President Trump was hoping his foreign trip would shift the conversation away from scandals, he may be out of luck,” said Morning Consult Co-Founder and Chief Research Officer Kyle Dropp, according to Politico. “Over the last week, support for beginning impeachment proceedings among voters rose from 38 percent to 43 percent.”

Of that 43 percent who wished to see Trump impeached, slightly more than half of the respondents (54 percent) believe the president “has proven he is unfit to serve and should be removed from office, regardless of whether he committed an impeachable offense or not.”

Overall, Trump’s plunging approval rating seemed to be nonpartisan. As Newsweek pointed out Monday, right-leaning polls of voter sentiment have also seen a dip. Rasmussen Reports said Tuesday that its Presidential Tracking Poll found that 46 percent of “likely U.S. voters” approved of the president's performance, while 54 percent disapproved.

Fox News reported at the end of May that 40 percent of registered voters polled by telephone approved of the president's performance, while 53 percent disapproved. The poll results dipped significantly from its own February report, which saw Trump's favorability at 48 percent, compared with 47 percent who disapproved.

As International Business Times reported Thursday, Trump’s favorability among Americans is at a historic low. Rasmussen, Gallup and Survey Monkey all reported similar poll figures that found Trump’s disapproval rating among American voters outweighed his favorability by double digits.
