Tom Cruise’s upcoming space adventure has finally found a director.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Cruise’s upcoming movie, which will be partially shot in outer space, will be helmed by Doug Liman. Liman and Cruise have previously worked in movies like “American Made” and “Edge Of Tomorrow.”

Liman has helmed a lot of big projects in the past. In 2002, he directed Matt Damon’s critically acclaimed movie “The Bourne Identity.” Meanwhile, in 2005, he directed Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.”

The script for the movie is also written by Liman.

The top-secret project is backed by Elon Musk and NASA. However, no studio has been attached to the project as of late.

The “War Of The Worlds” star would have to finish Christopher McQuarrie’s “Mission: Impossible 7” as soon as they are allowed to shoot and then start filming the secret project. The film shooting had to be put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The three-week shooting schedule in Venice, Italy was immediately terminated by Paramount Pictures as soon as the uproar of COVID-19 cases became apparent, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

"Out of an abundance of caution for the safety and well-being of our cast and crew, and efforts of the local Venetian government to halt public gatherings in response to the threat of coronavirus, we are altering the production plan for our three-week shoot in Venice the scheduled first leg of an extensive production for 'Mission: Impossible 7,'" a spokesperson for Paramount shared.

The esteemed actor will be next seen in “Top Gun: Maverick,” a sequel to the cult-classic “Top Gun” that was released in the theaters thirty years ago. Recently, Cruise shared how the film’s crew avoided using CGI since he wanted to make the movie cinematically authentic.

The "Jack Reacher" star also revealed that he was pretty excited about the movie and the challenges that came with it.

“We just started talking. And I realized that there were things that we could accomplish cinematically. And I started getting excited about this big challenge of, ‘How do we do it?’ So I said to Jerry, ‘I will do it if…’ meaning, I am not going to do the CGI stuff,” Cruise said.

While the plot details are unknown, the casting details suggest that the story will focus on Maverick (played by Cruise) interacting with a new generation of pilots.

The rest of the cast includes Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, Glen Powell, and Val Kilmer is reprising his role of “Iceman” from the original film.
