Not long after Rebekah Brooks resigned as CEO of News International, the British newspaper arm of News Corp., Dow Jones & Co. CEO Les Hinton offered his resignation to Rupert Murdoch on Friday.

Dow Jones & Co., the parent company of the Wall Street Journal, was purchased by News Corp. in 2007. Hinton also served as the publisher of the Wall Street Journal.

Hinton was the head of News International when British tabloid News of the World, edited by Brooks at the time, allegedly hacked into the voicemails of a missing girl, among other people.

The revelations that News of the World gained access to the voicemails of Milly Dowler, who was abducted in 2002 and found murdered six months later, led to heightened criticism of News Corp. and Murdoch, 80. The FBI is reportedly launching its own investigation into whether or not News of the World employees hacked into phones belonging to victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
