'Downton Abbey' Season 5 Spoilers: 8 Things To Know Before The Jan. 4 Premiere On PBS
“Downton Abbey” Season 5 is about to premiere in the U.S., but first fans need to know what to expect. The series will pick up a little after the Season 4 finale, and it’ll jump right into the drama. We’ve seen the premiere, and there are a few juicy teasers we can share:
Edith’s Daughter -- Edith (Laura Carmichael) decided she would bring her baby back from Switzerland. She gave her daughter to a nice family in town, but that makes it likely someone will discover her secret. At the very least, townspeople and her family will wonder why she is spending so much time with a farmer. The friendship may spark some more scandalous rumors.
Mary’s Loves -- Mary (Michelle Dockery) will have multiple love interests this season. Tony Gillingham (Tom Cullen) appears completely willing to marry her, but that might not work out. It looks like she may not be interested in heading down the aisle immediately. Mary will have another love interest in the “Downton Abbey” Season 5 Christmas special, played by “The Good Wife” actor Matthew Goode.
Isobel’s Love Interest -- Isobel (Penelope Wilton) won’t be missing out on the romantic storylines. She will be courted by Lord Merton (Douglas Reith), but Lady Violet (Maggie Smith) won’t be happy about it.
Is Bates A Killer? -- Although Anna (Joanne Froggatt) would love to have kids and a quiet life, she is still dealing with her rape. Mr. Greene (Nigel Harman) died a little too conveniently after he attacked Anna. Mary burned the train ticket from Bates’ (Brendan Coyle) jacket that would have implicated him in the murder. However, the police will still be looking for someone to blame. Everyone at the Abbey will have to wonder whether Bates actually killed him.
The Mystery Of Michael Gregson -- Edith still doesn’t know Michael’s (Charles Edwards) whereabouts in the premiere. If he is alive, he doesn’t know he has a daughter.
Tom Branson May Leave -- In the “Downton Abbey” Season 5 premiere, it’s clear Tom (Allen Leech) is still feeling out of place, despite schoolteacher Sarah Bunting’s (Daisy Lewis) interest in him. Leech told the Independent viewers will know whether his character is staying by the season finale.
Carson’s Big Offer -- Carson (Jim Carter) will have an offer to do something very important for the community. Lord Grantham (Hugh Bonneville) is even jealous that Carson was the first choice.
No George Clooney -- Despite rumors, George Clooney did not appear in an actual episode of “Downton Abbey.” He appeared in a comedic sketch for charity, which you can watch now.
“Downton Abbey” Season 5 will premiere on PBS Sunday, Jan. 4, at 9 p.m. EST. Which plot line are you most excited for in the premiere? Sound off in the comments section below!
