Martin (voiced by Samm Hodges) is turning a year older in Season 1, episode 6 of “Downward Dog.”

According to the synopsis for the episode, Martin’s birthday comes up, but just wants to nap in celebration. His birthday plan, however, seems to have changed when Jenn (Kirby Howell-Baptiste) and her new puppy pay him and Nan (Allison Tolman) a visit.

Also in the episode, Jenn and Nan have a night out in order to forget about their respective relationship dramas.

In Season 1, episode 5, Nan and her ex-boyfriend Jason (Lucas Neff) had a fight after she scolded him for unknowingly leaving Martin outside the house the whole night while she’s away in New York City. “Jason, Martin could have died! You’re such a child sometimes. It’s unreal,” an upset Nan tells Jason, who spent the whole day playing the virtual reality game “Moons of Deimos” instead of watching over Martin.

“When do you not make mistakes, Jason?” asks Nan after Jason apologized for what he did. “I asked you to be a grown up for one day. One single day. I feel like such an idiot for thinking you could pull that off.”

Apparently, those words hurt Jason. “You know what? You shouldn’t say things like that to me,” Jason tells Nan before heading out the house and saying that he’s not going to come back.

Nan and Jason have been broken up for a while at the beginning of the series premiere. The two, however, reconnected the day after Nan drunk-dialed Jason, telling him to come to her house and get his motorcycle parked at her tiny doorstep. Nan repeatedly told Jason over the phone that she no longer loves him but had always ended her call with “I love you.”

Although Nan and Jason have slept with one another since their split, Nan made it clear in Season 1, episode 2 that they couldn’t get back together as a couple because she wants to focus on her career. Jason respected Nan’s decision and agreed to remain friends with her. But following their fight in episode 5, it’s unclear whether or not the two will ever reconcile.

“Downward Dog” Season 1, episode 6, titled “Old,” airs on Tuesday, June 20 at 8 p.m. EDT on ABC.
