Nan (Allison Tolman) is going to be away from home in Season 1, episode 5 of “Downward Dog.”

According to the synopsis for the episode, titled “Trashed,” Nan visits New York City with Jenn (Kirby Howell-Baptiste) and Kevin (Barry Rothbart) for a big marketing meeting. While the agenda of the meeting is unclear, promotional photos for the episode suggest that Nan is going to present the advertising campaign she and her team have developed for Clark + Bow Outfitters in front of the company’s top executives.

Nan first presented the idea for her advertising campaign at the Pittsburgh office of Clark + Bow Outfitters at the end of Season 1, episode 1. “Every day it doesn’t matter [to my dog] if I gained weight or if my skin is all broken out or if I can’t stop crying for a week. Every day, he still looks at me exactly the same way, like I am the most beautiful thing he has ever seen,” Nan said during her presentation. “I just thought what if I could see myself the way my dog sees me. What if I could love myself like that? What if we as a brand, we could do that for our customers? What if instead of showing them this endless parade of perfectly cast and lit and retouched models, what if we just showed people themselves? What if we literally turn all of our storefronts into giant mirrors with big font that just reads: ‘Look at how beautiful you are.’ I think this would be good for our brand. Maybe it would make the world a little bit better place, too.”

During her visit to New York City, Nan also finds herself fantasizing about her potential romantic future in the Big Apple.

Meanwhile, Martin (voiced by Samm Hodges) is left with Jason (Lucas Neff) at Nan’s home. In a promo clip for the episode, Nan seemingly asks Jason what his plans are while she’s away, and her ex-boyfriend replies: “Virtual reality!”

Martin, on the other hand, uses Nan’s absence as an opportunity to go on a trash-eating bender. “I’ve had garbage binges that were honestly like transformative. They changed me,” Martin says in the video.
