Dr. Ranj Reveal Aching Joint Treatments That Will Not Do You Any Good
KEY POINTS
- Suffering from aching joints can be debilitating
- There are supplements that could help, and there are those that may not
- One renowned TV doctor advised staying away from two supplements, which he described as a "waste of money"
Experiencing aching joints is common, especially if you are not the type of person who constantly engages in physical activities, or you are suffering from inflammatory health issues. Patients who experience aching joints would often turn to natural supplements or painkillers in order to alleviate the symptoms.
While this may have been the practice of many patients, one renowned TV doctor poured cold water on the belief on two supplements purportedly easing symptoms of aching joints. In fact, Dr. Singh took to This Morning and defined the reliance on the supplements as a waste of money.
Cause of Aching Joints
Aching joints are caused by four primary things. You have wear and tear, inflammatory conditions, infections, and, of course, injury. During cold weather, many of those who suffer from the condition would attest to their symptoms getting worse. When you’re not that active, and you spend a lot of time indoors, you may suffer more from the pain.
The Remedy
According to Dr. Singh, during the cold season, you may be able to combat the pain by staying as active as possible. This is the key, said Singh. In addition to staying active during this period, you must also seek the right joint pain treatment.
Dr. Singh advised that if you would be seeking supplementation to combat joint pain, then you must avoid two supplements. In the Express report, Dr. Singh advised avoiding chondroitin and glucosamine. He said that there is no evidence that they do something good for the condition.
He said that you must not waste your money on these supplements, as per the current levels of evidence available. Studies have shown that glucosamine supplements create a negative impact on collagen as it reduces this protein in the body. This protein is needed to protect the joints.
As for chondroitin, there have been studies that showed that it reduces stiffness and joint pain in those who suffer from osteoarthritis. However, the efficacy of the supplements in such areas has not yet been etched in stone.
Dr. Singh’s Advice
To combat pain, Dr. Singh advises to rest and to ice. This helps alleviate swelling and discomfort. You have the option to take painkillers either to apply it on the joint or by mouth directly. So basically, anti-inflammatory painkillers really help in alleviating aching joints’ symptoms.
