Drew Barrymore Says She Has Been Sending 'Personal Videos' To Britney Spears
Drew Barrymore says she has been privately supporting Britney Spears amid the pop star's conservatorship battle with her father, Jamie Spears.
"I appreciate all the people that have been supporting Britney on social media," Barrymore told ET on Wednesday. "I took a different turn. I've actually been sending her personal videos."
The "Charlie's Angels" star explained that she wanted to encourage Britney and tell her that "she is the key to her freedom." The actress said she was "very invested in this."
"I think everyone deserves the chance to get their life right, wrong and everything in between," she added.
Barrymore said Britney's conservatorship battle received huge amounts of public attention because "it's about something bigger" and about someone being allowed to live their life.
"And so, I'm invested in this and I really want her to find her freedom," she added.
The actress also revealed the response she received from Britney, noting that there were "little smoke signals."
"[I wanted to] really show her I'm someone who has understood what a journey is like," Barrymore added. "And I don't compare myself to her but I'm here to support her if there's anything she needs in private."
Jamie on Tuesday filed a petition to end the conservatorship after 13 years and it will be heard on Jan. 28 next year.
Barrymore had earlier spoken about her own experience growing up in the spotlight and why she has empathy toward others.
"I have so much empathy toward so many people," she said on SiriusXM's "The Howard Stern Show" in February. "I'm sure that people look on and think, 'These party girls, these privileges, how dare they have feelings about any of this? They've put themselves out there, they've asked for this -- it's fair f--king game.' And I just go, 'They're humans. They're just humans.'"
"It's hard to grow up in front of people," Barrymore added. " It's just hard."
The actress started her career as a child star and worked in movies like "Altered States," "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial" and "Firestarter" in the early 1980s.
She was last seen in the 2020 movie "The Stand In." She is also hosting her own chat show, "The Drew Barrymore Show."
