Driver Sends Pickup Truck Flying Into Home's 2nd-Floor Bedroom; Passenger Killed
A driver may face charges after his pickup truck flew and crashed into the second-floor bedroom of a house in New Jersey, killing his passenger and critically injuring a woman who was in the room when the incident took place.
The driver, identified as 27-year-old John Nunn, was driving east on Route 57 in Washington Township at around 2.30 a.m. Sunday when he tried to pass two other vehicles and lost control of the red Dodge Ram, officials said. He then struck a mailbox and a stone pillar before crashing into the home's second floor, New York Post reported.
Photos from the scene showed the house with a gaping hole that exposed the top-floor bedroom after the Dodge Ram flew into it. Speaking to Lehigh Valley Live, Warren County Prosecutor James L. Pfeiffer called it "one of the worst crash scenes that we've ever seen."
Nunn, a Washington Borough resident, was ejected from the vehicle and landed on the first floor. He suffered minor injuries. However, his passenger, 24-year-old Tyler Balog, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, Pfeiffer told the outlet.
One of the homeowners, a woman, was inside the bedroom when the truck hit, authorities said. She was found in critical condition and transported to Morristown Medical Center following the crash. Another homeowner, a man, was also in the residence but not in the bedroom. He was unhurt but was brought to Hackettstown Medical Center as a precaution.
Officials said Nunn may face criminal charges in connection with the incident because speed and alcohol are believed to have contributed to the crash. The case is being reviewed by the Warren County Prosecutor's Office.
Nunn and his passenger were at a bar in the Washington area prior to the accident, the prosecutor said, adding that the driver was already intoxicated by then and was no longer served alcohol.
The pair was likely on their way to another person's residence when the crash occurred, according to Pfeiffer.
