A man in India's Uttar Pradesh state was arrested over the weekend after he allegedly flung his 8-month-old daughter repeatedly to the ground until she died during a drunken argument with his wife.
Mohammad Nazim, of Mandawali, arrived drunk at his in-laws' house in the village of Rahatpur Khurd on Saturday night and demanded his daughter be sent back to him after the child and his wife, identified as Mahtab Jahan, had moved in following a quarrel, The Times of India reported.
The couple's confrontation escalated into an argument, and Jahan refused to send her daughter back with her husband, according to the outlet. Nazim then allegedly picked up the child and threw her on the floor repeatedly until she died.
Jahan took the child to a private hospital, where doctors later pronounced her dead. Authorities learned of the incident after Jahan filed a complaint with police accusing Nazim of murder.
"Nazim was arrested early on Sunday morning and sent to jail," Bijnor police superintendent Dharamveer Singh was quoted as saying by The Times of India.
Nazim and Jahan got married 18 months ago but were not on the best of terms with each other, according to police.
A similar incident happened in Uttar Pradesh last week when a 30-year-old man allegedly strangled his 21-day-old baby to death after getting into a fight with his wife.
The man, identified as Shushil Pal, was arrested after he was accused of strangling his child last Tuesday and attempting to flee.
Pal and his wife, identified as Sunita Devi, reportedly had frequent arguments, one of which had prompted the woman to go to her parents' home in a nearby village with her baby.
Pal had started arguing with his wife over the phone Tuesday before going to his in-laws' house and killing the baby. He told police Devi "did not hear out his problems."
Police are now checking whether Pal is mentally stable, an unnamed senior police officer said. He added that authorities have talked with Pal's parents and relatives to find out more details about him.
A case had been filed over the incident, and an investigation was underway.
