Camilla Parker Bowles had a lot of concerns when she married Prince Charles.
The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall have endured a lot for their love for each other. When Prince Charles married his second wife, the ceremony wasn’t as grand as his fairytale-like wedding to Princess Diana.
The future king and Camilla opted to have a civil service. On the day of their wedding, the duchess was concerned that the public might not accept her warmly.
“She was terrified no one would come,” journalist Carole Malone said about Camilla’s fears. “She was terrified she'd be booed.”
Malone also recalled a film footage of the streets at about 6 a.m. Surprisingly, no one was on the street of Windsor unlike other royal weddings. But according to her, at the time, it was also freezing as it was a “really, really cold day.”
“She must have been terrified that no one would be there and as a journalist, I was looking at it and thinking the reaction to this is going to be national apathy which is almost as bad as protest. However, by 10.30 the streets were thronging with people,” she added.
Meanwhile, royal expert Penny Junor said that the duchess was not feeling well on her big day. In fact, it took four people to coax her out of bed.
She had sinusitis, but Junor said that it was her nerves that kept Camilla under the covers. Just like Malone, Junor claimed Camilla was “terrified.”
The duchess’ dresser, Jacqui Meakin, Annabel, Laura and the housemaid named Joy tried to persuade Camilla to get out of her bed to no avail. It came to a point when Camilla’s sister offered to wear her wedding gown to represent her.
“Finally her sister said, ‘OK, that’s all right. I’m going to do it for you. I’m going to get into your clothes.’ Only at that point did the bride-to-be get up,” Junor added.
Although the public were not very supportive of Prince Charles and Camilla’s romance at the start, they have already warmed up for the couple. The Prince of Wales and Camilla celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary on April 9.
