KEY POINTS

  • Dunkaroos is back due to really insistent public demand
  • The cookies and frosting snack that hit it big in the 1990s will first be available at 7-Eleven
  • Admire-roos are in snack heaven

Dunkaroos lovers rejoice! Your favorite cookie and frosting snack from the 1990s that bade farewell to the United States in 2012 is coming back.

This popular treat from General Mills/Betty Crocker is "Definitely Coming Back. Summer 2020," said the product's Twitter account. The cutesy retro-themed video announcement showed 1990's stuff that aren't coming back (cassette tapes); might come back (90's fashion); and definitely coming back (Dunkaroos).

No definite day yet for the U.S. re-launch but the company did say the cookies will first be available at 7-Eleven stores nationwide. Dunkaroos will then make it to retail shelves in convenience stores and grocery stores.

Dunkaroos' return is said to be due to endless requests from "admire-roos" such as Kim Kardashian West, who in 2018 tweeted she still remains obsessed with the sweet snack. Model and actress Chrissy Teigen is also a fan. She complains she's had to settle for a Dunkaroos wannabe for lack of the real thing.

Not all the Dunkaroos flavors fans come to love will be coming back in the summer, however. The first to get here will be single-serve packs of Vanilla Cookies with Vanilla and Sprinkles frosting.

But a lot are hoping the other Dunkaroos flavors -- Vanilla Frosting with Chocolate Cookies, Chocolate Frosting with Graham Cookies, Strawberry Frosting with Vanilla Cookies, and Rainbow Sprinkle Frosting with Chocolate Chip Graham Cookies -- among others, will make it to market later on.

It seems the plan for Dunkaroos' return wasn't that well kept secret. In October 2018, the Instagram account junkfoodleaks, which taste tests new snacks, posted about Dunkaroos' return. It showed an image of a Dunkaroos' box with the message, "Coming Back" and "Summer 2020." And, on Monday, Dunkaroos tersely replied: "It's happening."

Admire-roos made their happy thoughts about the return public on Twitter. "Absolutely the best news i have ever heard in my life," said a tweet. "Thank you," said another. A tweeter wrote, "Gonna be a great year." While another said, "Gonna be a great year."
