The medical condition of Boston bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is improving: Hospital officials upgraded his condition Tuesday from serious to fair.

Tsarnaev, 19, had been listed in serious condition since he was captured Thursday night inside a boat in a backyard in the Boston suburb of Watertown, Mass. He is being held in Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center under heavy guard.

The U.S. attorney’s Office for Massachusetts tweeted that the change in Tsarnaev’s condition came at noon Tuesday EDT.

“According to Beth Israel Deaconess, at noon today, Dzhokhar Tsarvaev's condition is listed as ‘fair.’ Releasing info at request of BIDMC,” the tweet read.

Tsarnaev, along with his deceased brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, are suspected of committing the Boston Marathon bombings that killed three people and injured more than 170 others.

Hours after the FBI released photos of the then-unidentified suspects, the Tsarnaevs allegedly committed a carjacking and murdered an MIT police officer before engaging in a firefight with authorities early Friday morning that left Tamerlan Tsarnaev dead.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was arraigned on two terrorism-related charges Monday. During a court hearing conducted at his bedside at Beth Israel, the 19-year-old suspect nodded his head in answering questions and responded “no” when asked if he had enough money to hire an attorney, according to a transcript of the proceedings.

The criminal complaint charging Dzhokhar Tsarnaev with the bombings indicated the 19-year-old suffered wounds to his “head, neck, leg and hand.”

Tsarnaev’s next court hearing has been scheduled for May 30.

The news of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s improving medical condition came as new details emerged concerning the brothers’ plans had they not been captured or killed by authorities.

The suspected bombers were thinking of going to New York City, the carjacking victim told authorities, according to CBS News.

“The only word I recognized was Manhattan,” the Mercedes-Benz owner told police, adding that most of the conversation between the brothers was conducted in Russian.
