Earnings Preview: The Walt Disney Company (DIS), Groupon Inc (GRPN), News Corp (NWSA), DISH Network Corp (DISH)
The peak weeks of this earnings season are now behind us, and the number of reports we get each week will drift lower.
However, there are still quite a few big-name companies left to report their first-quarter earnings, including Dish Network, Groupon, News Corp., Sysco and Walt Disney.
Earnings at companies in the S&P 500 index are at record levels. They are forecast to rise by 4.4 percent in the first quarter, according to S&P Capital IQ data. To date, about 75 percent of the S&P 500 companies have reported quarterly results, with 69 percent topping expectations and 21 percent missing, according to Thomson Reuters data. But only 46 percent of companies have beaten their revenue projections. On average, sales have come in 1 percent below estimates.
We ran a screen and produced a list of 30 notable companies set to report their earnings between May 6 and May 9. We have highlighted their expected reporting dates and times, along with analysts' earnings-per-share (excluding one-time items) and revenue estimates from Reuters, as well as the stocks' year-to-date performances.
Monday Before Market Open, or BMO:
Sysco Corp. (NYSE: SYY) is a North American distributor of food and related products primarily to the foodservice or food-away-from-home industry. The company has a market cap of $20.45 billion. It is expected to report FY 2013 third-quarter EPS of 43 cents on revenue of $11.10 billion, compared with a profit of 44 cents per share on revenue of $10.51 billion in the year-ago period. Sysco is trading at around $34.88 per share. So far this year, the stock has gained 10.2 percent.
Tyson Foods, Inc. (NYSE: TSN) is a meat protein and food production company. The company has a market capitalization of $8.66 billion. It is expected to report FY 2013 second-quarter EPS of 45 cents on revenue of $8.58 billion, compared with a profit of 44 cents per share on revenue of $8.27 billion in the year-ago period. Tyson Foods is trading at around $24.51 per share. So far this year, the stock has gained 26 percent.
Monday After Market Close, or AMC:
Anadarko Petroleum Corp. (NYSE:APC) is an independent oil-and-gas exploration and production company. The company has a market cap of $41.72 billion. It is expected to report FY 2013 first-quarter EPS of 94 cents on revenue of $3.49 billion, compared with a profit of 92 cents a share on revenue of $3.45 billion in the year-ago period. Anadarko is trading at around $83.45 a share. So far this year, the stock has gained 12.2 percent.
First Solar, Inc. (Nasdaq: FSLR) manufactures and sells photovoltaic solar modules with an advanced thin-film semiconductor technology, and it designs, constructs and sells PV solar power systems. The company has a market cap of $3.92 billion. It is expected to report FY 2013 first-quarter EPS of 75 cents on revenue of $725.26 million, compared with a loss of 8 cents a share on revenue of $497.06 million in the year-ago period. First Solar is trading at around $45.05 a share. So far this year, the stock has gained 45.5 percent.
Frontier Communications Corp (Nasdaq: FTR) is a communications company providing services primarily to rural areas and small and medium-size towns and cities in the U.S. The company has a market cap of $4.07 billion. It is expected to report FY 2013 first-quarter EPS of 6 cents on revenue of $1.22 billion, compared with a profit of 5 cents a share on revenue of $1.27 billion in the year-ago period. Frontier Communications Corp is trading at around $4.07 a share. So far this year, the stock has lost 4.8 percent.
Tuesday BMO:
DirecTV (Nasdaq: DTV) is a provider of digital-television entertainment in the U.S. and Latin America. The company has a market cap of $32.34 billion. It is expected to report FY 2013 first-quarter EPS of $1.08 on revenue of $7.41 billion, compared with a profit of $1.07 a share on revenue of $7.05 billion in the year-ago period. DirecTV is trading at around $56.82 a share. So far this year, the stock has gained 13.3 percent.
Emerson Electric Co. (NYSE:EMR) is engaged in designing and supplying product technology and delivering engineering services and solutions in a range of industrial, commercial and consumer markets around the world. The company has a market cap of $39.87 billion. It is expected to report FY 2013 second-quarter EPS of 78 cents on revenue of $6.03 billion, compared with a profit of 74 cents per share on revenue of $5.92 billion in the year-ago period. Emerson Electric is trading at around $55.30 per share. So far this year, the stock has gained 4.3 percent.
EOG Resources Inc. (NYSE: EOG) is one of the largest independent oil and natural gas companies in the U.S. The company has a market cap of $32.57 billion. It is expected to report FY 2013 first-quarter EPS of $1.17 on revenue of $3.04 billion, compared with a profit of $1.17 per share on revenue of $2.81 billion in the year-ago period. EOG Resources is trading at around $119.27 per share. So far this year, the stock has lost 0.7 percent.
FirstEnergy Corp. (NYSE: FE) is a diversified energy company. The company has a market cap of $19.26 billion. It is expected to report FY 2013 first-quarter EPS of 68 cents on revenue of $3.66 billion, compared with a profit of 82 cents per share on revenue of $4.08 billion in the year-ago period. FirstEnergy is trading at around $46.03 per share. So far this year, the stock has gained 10.3 percent.
NRG Energy Inc (NYSE: NRG) is an integrated wholesale power generation and retail electricity company. The company has a market capitalization of $8.92 billion. It is expected to report a loss of 28 cents a share in the first quarter of fiscal year 2013 on revenue of $1.92 billion, compared with a loss of 92 cents a share on revenue of $1.86 billion in the year-ago period. NRG Energy is trading at around $27.58 per share. So far this year, the stock has gained 20 percent.
Tuesday AMC:
The Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS) is a diversified worldwide entertainment company. The company has a market capitalization of $114.48 billion. It is expected to report FY 2013 second-quarter EPS of 76 cents on revenue of $10.49 billion, compared with a profit of 58 cents per share on revenue of $9.63 billion in the year-ago period. Walt Disney is trading at around $63.39 per share. So far this year, the stock has gained 27.3 percent.
Electronic Arts Inc. (Nasdaq: EA) develops, markets, publishes and distributes game software content and services that can be played by consumers on a variety of video game machines and electronic devices. The company has a market capitalization of $5.18 billion. It is expected to report FY 2013 fourth-quarter EPS of 58 cents on revenue of $1.04 billion, compared with a profit of 17 cents per share on revenue of $997.00 million in the year-ago period. Electronic Arts is trading at around $17.25 per share. So far this year, the stock has gained 18.7 percent.
Mondelez International Inc. (Nasdaq: MDLZ), formerly Kraft Foods Inc., is a food company. The company has a market cap of $55.86 billion. It is expected to report FY 2013 first-quarter EPS of 34 cents on revenue of $8.68 billion, compared with a profit of 57 cents a share on revenue of $13.09 billion in the year-ago period. Mondelez International is trading at around $31.43. So far this year, the stock has gained 23.5 percent.
Marathon Oil Corp. (NYSE:MRO) is an international energy company. The company has a market cap of $22.62 billion. It is expected to report FY 2013 first-quarter EPS of 72 cents on revenue of $4.25 billion, compared with a profit of 67 cents a share on revenue of $4.04 billion in the year-ago period. Marathon Oil is trading at around $31.96 a share. So far this year, the stock has gained 4.2 percent.
Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC) is a global provider of security, storage, and systems management solutions that help businesses and consumers secure and manage their information. The company has a market cap of $16.94 billion. It is expected to report FY 2013 fourth-quarter EPS of 38 cents on revenue of $1.73 billion, compared with a profit of 38 cents a share on revenue of $1.68 billion in the year-ago period. Symantec Corporation is trading at around $24.58 a share. So far this year, the stock has gained 30.6 percent.
Whole Foods Market Inc. (Nasdaq: WFM) is a natural and organic-foods supermarket firm. The company has a market cap of $16.55 billion. It is expected to report FY 2013 second-quarter EPS of 73 cents on revenue of $3.03 billion, compared with a profit of 64 cents a share on revenue of $2.67 billion in the year-ago period. Whole Foods Market is trading at around $89.28 a share. So far this year, the stock has lost 2 percent.
Williams Companies, Inc. (NYSE: WMB) is an energy infrastructure company focused on connecting North America’s hydrocarbon resource plays to markets for natural gas, natural gas liquids and olefins. The company has a market cap of $25.40 billion. It is expected to report FY 2013 first-quarter EPS of 25 cents on revenue of $2.03 billion, compared with a profit of 39 cents a share on revenue of $2.02 billion in the year-ago period. Williams Companies is trading at around $37.29 a share. So far this year, the stock has gained 13.69 percent.
Wednesday AMC:
CenturyLink, Inc. (NYSE: CTL) provides a range of communications services. The company has a market capitalization of $23.07 billion. It is expected to report FY 2013 first-quarter EPS of 69 cents on revenue of $4.51 billion, compared with a profit of 68 cents per share on revenue of $4.61 billion in the year-ago period. CenturyLink is trading at around $37.16 per share. So far this year, the stock has lost 5.8 percent.
Cognizant Technology Solutions Corp. (NASDAQ:CTSH) is a provider of custom information technology, consulting, and business process outsourcing services. The company has a market cap of $19.14 billion. It is expected to report FY 2013 first-quarter EPS of 93 cents on revenue of $2.01 billion, compared with a profit of 79 cents per share on revenue of $1.71 billion in the year-ago period. Cognizant Technology Solutions is trading at around $63.43 per share. So far this year, the stock has lost 14.2 percent.
News Corp. (Nasdaq: NWSA) is a diversified global media company. The company has a market cap of $74.50 billion. It is expected to report FY 2013 third-quarter EPS of 36 cents on revenue of $9.14 billion, compared with a profit of 37 cents per share on revenue of $8.40 billion in the year-ago period. News Corp. is trading at around $32.01 per share. So far this year, the stock has gained 25.7 percent.
Groupon Inc. (Nasdaq: GRPN) is a local online-commerce marketplace that connects merchants to consumers by offering goods and services at a discount. The company has a market cap of $3.91 billion. It is expected to report FY 2013 first-quarter EPS of 3 cents on revenue of $588.92 million, compared with a profit of 2 cents a share on revenue of $559.28 million in the year-ago period. Groupon is trading at around $5.96 a share. So far this year, the stock has gained 22.2 percent.
Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc. (NASDAQ:GMCR) is engaged in the specialty coffee and coffee maker businesses. The company has a market cap of $8.53 billion. It is expected to report FY 2013 second-quarter EPS of 73 cents on revenue of $1.03 billion, compared with a profit of 64 cents a share on revenue of $885.05 million in the year-ago period. Green Mountain Coffee Roasters is trading at around $57.43 a share. So far this year, the stock has gained 38.7 percent.
Thursday BMO:
The AES Corp. (NYSE: AES) is a global power company. The company has a market cap of $10.21 billion. It is expected to report FY 2013 first-quarter EPS of 28 cents on revenue of $4.62 billion, compared with a profit of 37 cents per share on revenue of $4.74 billion in the year-ago period. AES is trading at around $13.74 per share. So far this year, the stock has gained 28.2 percent.
Apache Corporation (NYSE: APA) is an independent energy company. The company has a market cap of $28.81 billion. It is expected to report FY 2013 first-quarter EPS of $2.21 on revenue of $4.31 billion, compared with a profit of $3.00 per share on revenue of $4.54 billion in the year-ago period. Apache Corporation is trading at around $73.57 per share. So far this year, the stock has lost 6.3 percent.
Dean Foods Co (NYSE: DF) is a food and beverage company. The company has a market cap of $3.58 billion. Windstream Corporation (Nasdaq: WIN) is a provider of voice and data network communications, and managed services, to businesses in the U.S. The company has a market capitalization of $4.95 billion. It is expected to report FY 2013 first-quarter EPS of 11 cents on revenue of $1.53 billion, compared with a profit of 13 cents per share on revenue of $1.55 billion in the year-ago period. Windstream is trading at around $8.38 per share. So far this year, the stock has gained 1.2 percent.
Dish Network Corp. (Nasdaq: DISH) is a pay-television provider. The company has a market cap of $17.79 billion. It is expected to report FY 2013 first-quarter EPS of 53 cents on revenue of $3.61 billion, compared with a profit of 80 cents per share on revenue of $3.58 billion in the year-ago period. Dish is trading at around $39.28 per share. So far this year, the stock has gained 7.9 percent.
Thursday AMC:
Nvidia Corp. (Nasdaq: NVDA) is engaged in creating the graphics chips used in personal computers. The company has a market cap of $8.48 billion. It is expected to report FY 2014 first-quarter EPS of 10 cents on revenue of $940.54 million, compared with a profit of 10 cents per share on revenue of $924.88 million in the year-ago period. Nvidia is trading at around $13.75 per share. So far this year, the stock has gained 12.2 percent.
