Eiza González issued an apology after her old photos from a previous project in which she’s seen wearing blackface makeup resurfaced.

Old photos of González from “Lola, Érase Una Vez” (“Lola, Once Upon a Time”) back in 2007 when she was just a teenager have resurfaced. In the snaps, she is wearing blackface makeup and the Mexican actress immediately addressed the matter.

“I am deeply sorry and ashamed about having worn blackface makeup shown in the images circulating. As a 15-year-old child actor on my first job in a Mexican telenovela, I was pressured against my will, and with no negotiating power, I could not advocate for myself in the situation,” she told Page Six on Wednesday (June 24).

“I wish I had the voice and knowledge then that I have now.”

Aside from the blackface makeup, another photo being questioned featured her dressed as a geisha. González also explained the snap.

According to Josh Duhamel’s ex, it was taken during her trip to Japan. Her host told her that wearing the costume and the traditional makeup was considered “appreciation of their culture.” She added that she understood that out of context, it would call for a dialogue about contemporary cultural appropriation.

“As a Mexican woman and an immigrant, I have faced racism and ignorance throughout my life and career. I would never intentionally participate in anything that I knew would cause harm or distress to another person,” she added.

“More than gestures of apology, it is my responsibility to educate myself and use my voice to stand up for others. And again I deeply apologize for hurting anyone.”

González has been supporting the black community. She even shared a photo from a protest on social media and praised the Black women.

“Thank you, and to all the black women who shared and poured your heart out today. I stand by you, I feel you, I hear you, I SEE YOU. Happy birthday Breonna we didn’t loose you in vain, you are changing the world,” she wrote in Instagram.

Meanwhile, González’s apology comes on the heels of reports that she is dating Timothée Chalamet, who broke up with Johnny Depp’s daughter Lily-Rose Depp two months ago. According to Marie Claire, the two sparked romantic rumors after photos of them kissing while on vacation in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico over the weekend leaked.
