'Elder Scrolls Online' To Remain On PlayStation 4 'Exactly As It Was'
KEY POINTS
- The acquisition of Microsoft and Xbox of ZeniMax Online Studios won't affect support for "The Elder Scrolls Online" on PlayStation 4
- ZeniMax studio director Matt Firor said they expect the game to keep growing and thriving on the platforms where it is supported
- Earlier this summer, Bethesda had announced plans to bring "The Elder Scrolls Online" to next-gen consoles
Despite the sale of ZeniMax Online Studios and parent company ZeniMax Media to Xbox, the former has claimed that its popular MMO “The Elder Scrolls Online” will continue to be supported on current platforms.
“The Elder Scrolls Online” will continue to be supported “exactly as it was” on platforms including PlayStation 4 despite the sale to Microsoft and Xbox, Video Games Chronicle reports. Xbox has said that it will honor existing PlayStation agreements including exclusivity deals for “Deathloop” and “Ghostwire: Tokyo.”
In its own statement published following the acquisition news, ZeniMax Online Studios said “we fully expect [Elder Scrolls Online to keep growing and thriving on each of the platforms that are currently supported.”
“We want to take this moment to reassure the entire ‘Elder Scrolls Online’ community that ESO will continue to be supported exactly as it was,” wrote studio director Matt Firor. “We are very happy with the news and can’t wait to see how the two companies working together can make ESO even better for everyone.”
With over 15 million players across consoles and OC, “The Elder Scrolls Online” has been the biggest of ZeniMax Online Studios’ franchises. The core “The Elder Scrolls Online” game, not including expansions, is already available via the Xbox Game Pass subscription.
The $7.5 billion deal of Microsoft acquiring ZeniMax Media has raised concerns that games developed by its studios, namely ZeniMax Online and Bethesda Game Studios, could become exclusive on Xbox resulting in their current partnerships with consoles like PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch ending.
However, at least this early in the new relationship, it would seem that the existing partnerships will not be discontinued by Microsoft.
Earlier in the summer, Bethesda Game Studios had announced plans to bring “The Elder Scrolls Online” to next-gen consoles Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. Players who own or purchase either title on Xbox One or PlayStation 4 will be able to upgrade for free to the next-gen versions when they are available, it said.
ZeniMax Online Studios also developed “Fallout 76” for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC while “Commander Kleen” is still under development for Android and iOS devices.
