Elderly Woman Sexually Assaulted And Stabbed To Death At Home; Suspect Arrested

An elderly woman has died after being stabbed 20 times by an attacker, who also allegedly assaulted her sexually, police said Monday.

The 62-year-old woman was reportedly attacked at her home in Delhi, the capital city of India, Sunday. The victim's son, who came back from work, saw her lying in a pool of blood and rushed the woman to a hospital, where she was declared dead.

The police identified the suspect after reviewing details from the CCTV footage of the area. The suspect was detained on charges of murder, news outlet NDTV reported.

"The police reached the hospital and found that the throat of the victim had been slit with a sharp-edged weapon and there were multiple injuries marks on her stomach. She had been declared brought dead," Priyanka Kashyap, Deputy Commissioner of Police, said.

The suspect reportedly confessed to committing the crime during an interrogation by police. He told the police that he was in an inebriated state when the incident happened. The police said the suspect had slit the victim's throat before stabbing her 20 times.

The deceased woman, a native from the eastern Indian state of Bihar, was living with her son and grandson in a house in Delhi. She used to sell vegetables near her house and had gone out on the same Sunday, along with her grandson. However, she returned home alone to cook food after putting her grandson in charge of her makeshift vegetable stall. That's when she was brutally attacked by the drunk man, the police said.

A knife, which police believe was used in the stabbing, had been recovered. No further details of the incident have been revealed.

The victim's body was sent for autopsy. Meanwhile, the police consider it as a case of sexual assault, India Today reported.

A similar case of sexual assault and murder was reported from the Northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh this week. The police found the body of an 11-year-old girl from a nearby farm after she was reported missing for a day. The police believe that the girl was raped before she was killed with a sharp object. The police have arrested six people in connection with the incident.
