KEY POINTS

  • Biden leads Trump by 13 percentage points in the presidential race, according to the latest poll by ABC News/The Washington Post
  • The former vice president only had a two percentage point lead in the previous poll last March
  • He and Trump are now tied as to who can best manage the economic recovery from the pandemic

Another poll since Joe Biden declared his candidacy for the presidency in April 2019 has him again beating President Donald Trump on Nov. 3.

The latest poll from ABC News/The Washington Post from May 25 to 28 showed a massive shift in public opinion against Trump, mainly as a result of his handling of the COVID-19 response.

Biden's lead over Trump among registered voters has surged in all three major voter metrics in the survey. Overall, the presidential contest stands at 53% to 40% for Biden over Trump among all adults. Biden wins, 53% to 43%, among those who reported being registered to vote. He also wins, 51% to 46%, among those who are both registered and certain to vote.

Langer Research Associates, which conducted the poll, said this result was Biden’s best among registered voters since the fall of 2019. It's a huge improvement over the two-point margin, 49% to 47%, posted by Biden in the previous poll March 25.

Trump's overall approval rating has also faltered since his favorable result on March 25. This was the first time in his presidency where a poll found more Americans approving than disapproving of the job he was doing. The numbers came to a 48% approval versus a 46% disapproval.

Trump sunk in the May poll. His disapproval rating has swelled by seven points to 53% while his approval rating has fallen two percentage points to 46%. Biden has widened his lead among Independents. He's now the Independents' choice for president by a margin of 56% to 39%. It's a massive 16-point jump considering Biden only had a one percentage point lead over Trump in the March survey.

Partisanship remained rock solid. A full 95% of Democratic voters said they'll vote for Biden while 94% of GOP voters have cast their lot with Trump.

This poll also confirmed each candidate’s previously revealed strengths among different demographics. As in previous polls, Trump was the man for male voters in general (52% to 44%) and among white male voters in particular (53% to 44%).

This new poll again affirmed Biden's solid and massive support among women voters (62% to 34%) and among non-white voters. African-Americans remain Biden's staunchest supporters with 89% of their votes going his way. The poll showed 69% of Hispanic voters backing Biden.

The last ABC/Post poll in March revealed a majority of Americans (51%) approved Trump's handling of the pandemic compared to 45% who said otherwise. These totals have been upended with 53% now saying they disapprove of Trump's response while 46% said they approve.

Asked who they trusted more to handle the federal government's pandemic response, 50% said Biden and 42% said, Trump. Voters were evenly split 47% to 47% when asked who they trusted more to manage the economic recovery from the pandemic. This is good news for Biden who has consistently lagged behind Trump in this key metric.
