KEY POINTS

  • Biden has consistently beaten Trump in key metrics in opinion polls dating back to early 2019
  • Biden, however, still lags behind the president as to who's better at managing the economy
  • The poll also showed more Americans holding the opinion that COVID-19 will be around for longer than predicted

Joe Biden has consistently dominated President Donald Trump as the choice of American voters on most key issues in opinion polls, including their choice for POTUS. Trump's only consistent ace-in-the-hole: the perception he's better than Biden in managing the United States economy.

The CNBC All-America Economic Survey for June confirms these findings. This poll of 800 registered American voters taken from June 19-22 showed voters going for Trump over Biden, 44% to 38%, when answering the question: Who has the best policies for the economy?

The percentages, however, are unfavorable for Trump when compared to the previous poll in April where he led, 46% to 38%. Surprisingly, Trump also led among Independents despite the economy tanking due to the economic paralysis engendered by COVID-19. Trump has a 42% to 26% lead over Biden among Independents on best policies for the economy.

“The economy may be what President Trump’s saving grace is going forward,” said Jay Campbell, partner with Hart Research Associates, was the Democratic pollster for the survey.

Trump's continued strong showing on this question despite high unemployment and reduced wages is being attributed to the historic American instinct of rallying around the president in times of crises like this one with the coronavirus.

The poll showed more Americans holding the opinion that COVID-19 will be around for longer than predicted. Three-quarters of respondents said a new wave of COVID-19 infections in the next six months is very or somewhat likely.

The poll also showed 60% of respondents saying the economy won’t be fully restored until 2021 or beyond, up from 52% in April. This pessimism, which may affect the perception of Trump as the better economic manager, is translating into a bleak belief that wages won't be what they used to be.

According to the poll, only 31% of respondents said they'll see higher wages in 2021, the most dismal result in this poll dating back to 2012.
