Elizabeth Olsen, the breakout star of Sundance
Elizabeth Olsen, the younger sister of the famous Olsen twins, Mary-kate and Ashley, may know a little about reflected glory but now it is time for her to bask in the sunshine. She is the new discovery at the Sundance film festival where two of her films are featuring ‘Martha Marcy May Marlene’,and ‘Silent House’.
‘Martha Mary.. is in the competition section and the Silent House is screening in the non competitive category. The first film is about a girl escaping from a cult and how it affects her psychologically and the other is a horror film shot in the single shot format that follows her for 90 minutes through her journey and growing panic in an empty summer house.
Both her films have gained her tremendous notice and she is being touted as the ‘breakout star’.
The 21-year-old, studying theater at NYU, waited a long time to decide to come into acting. She preferred studying theatre and doing stage work . She wanted to act but did not want the associated trouble that came with, fame and media attention. “I think that’s why I waited such a long time until I was comfortable as a person to start working professionally,” Elizabeth told MTV News. “It’s been what I wanted to do since I was seven or eight but I never wanted to be a child actor. I never wanted to be a brand. I want to be an actor. I feel good in my own skin. I just want to make movies and do theater.”
Asked about what she has learnt about acting and handling fame from her sisters, She said that nobody realizes that acting is a lot of hard work. To be in the limelight and stay grounded is important according to her. “I think it’s just staying grounded. It’s not something I think about. I think it’s something media puts upon people,” she added. “I don’t think it’s something that people healthily think about, like, ‘Now I’m a celebrity!’ I don’t think people should think like that”.
She also said that she would be grateful if all the media attention she is getting translates into more people watching her movie.
