Elon Musk's College Girlfriend Is Auctioning Old Memory Photos, Items From Relationship
Elon Musk's college girlfriend is selling old photos and items she obtained in their relationship through an online-auction. Some of the items have sold for thousands of dollars through Boston-based RR Auction.
Jennifer Gwynne and Musk started dating in 1994 when they both worked as resident advisors in their college dorm at the University of Pennsylvania. Musk was an economics major at the time. The relationship reportedly lasted about a year.
The current bids for the photos range from about $150 up to $630. The auction also includes a Musk signed one-dollar bill going for about $7,600, a Musk-signed birthday card going for about $10,000, and a 14K gold necklace that was given as a gift going for about $5,000 as of Sunday. The auction ends on Wednesday.
The birthday card states, "Happy Birthday, Jennifer (aka, Boo-Boo), Love, Elon."
The 18 pictures in the lot display unique memories of Musk at a young age. They show photos of Musk and Gwynne, single shots of Musk being serious or silly, and Musk along with friends.
In a statement, Gwynne explained the backstory behind the necklace. She said it came from Musk's father's emerald mine in Zambia.
"When we went to visit Elon's mother in Toronto during the Christmas break of 1994, Elon gave me both the small 'love, love, love' note and the necklace," Gwynne said.
"His mom had a number of these necklaces in a case in her bedroom, and Elon told me they were from his father's emerald mine in South Africa — he pulled one from the case. And because I had not gotten him anything as a Christmas gift (and I felt very guilty about that), he said we would consider the necklace an early birthday present for me," she said.
Gwynne, 48, works for a medical supply company and lives in Columbia, South Carolina. She said that part of the reason for the auction was to raise money for her 13-year-old stepson's college tuition.
