KEY POINTS

  • The Boring Company is Musk's hyperloop transportation venture
  • Job postings include positions of mechanical, electrical engineering
  • Elon Musk's Tesla has recently announced setting up a new factory in Austin

Elon Musk’s tunneling and transportation venture, The Boring Company, is planning an extensive project in Austin, Texas, for which it recently posted new job advertisements.

In a tweet, the company wrote, “Rumor has it that “Austin Chalk” is geologically one of the best soils for tunneling. Want to find out? Austin jobs now available.”

Those include electrical and mechanical engineering, business development lead, and technical recruiter jobs. When the tunneling project will actually start, and when The Boring Company will begin discussions with local authorities, has yet to be disclosed.

Musk seems to be favoring Austin lately. His EV company, Tesla, recently announced that the city will also be home to the company's next factory, which will largely focus on the production of its Model 3, Model Y and new EV pickup truck, Cybertruck. It will be a 4-5 million square foot plant, worth close to $1.1 billion. Tesla will hire as many as 5,000 workers at the new factory.

The Boring Company has five product lines, each of which includes one or multiple 12-foot inner diameter tunnels, project engineering, environmental review, and permitting. These are designed to be used for pedestrians, utilities and its Loop service, among others. The startup raised nearly $120 million in fresh funding in 2019, TechCrunch reported. It has a 1.14-mile test tunnel in Los Angeles, near the SpaceX headquarters.

The Loop is the company's most ambitious project and one that Musk is very passionate about. It is an underground public transportation system in which passengers are transported in vehicles traveling at up to 150 miles per hour through tunnels.

Musk has called hyperloop transportation the fifth mode of transportation. He tweeted in 2017 that he got “verbal govt approval” to build a tunnel between Washington, D.C. and New York, which would be a half-hour trip. It is not clear when this plan will materialize.

The Boring Company had undertaken two projects of its fast transit system Loop in Chicago and Maryland, but had to hit pause on it. It is currently working on a system of transit tunnels under the Las Vegas Convention Center.

A number of companies are experimenting with the Musk's ultra-fast transportation technology. On Sunday, Virgin Hyperloop successfully conducted its first-ever test with human passengers on a test track in Las Vegas.
