'Elvis' Movie: Baz Luhrmann Drops Elvis Presley Biopic Teaser, Release Date [Watch]
Director Baz Luhrmann took to Instagram Monday to drop a teaser of the highly anticipated movie, "Elvis," which is based on the legendary singer, Elvis Presley's life.
The 21-second teaser opened with a glimpse of actor Austin Butler, who plays Presley, standing alone. In the next scene, Butler could be seen from behind, heading towards the stage. A few more shots of Butler walking backstage were featured in the teaser.
At the end of the teaser, the new release date was revealed to be June 24, 2022. The movie was previously scheduled to release on Nov. 5.
The movie was first delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic as Tom Hanks (who played the singer's famous manager, Colonel Tom Parker in the movie) contracted the virus in March 2020.
"Elvis Monday," the 59-year-old director captioned the teaser. "Made a little something to let you good people know we are taking care of business on June 24, 2022," Luhrmann wrote.
Fans took to the comments section to praise the teaser.
One of the fans wrote, "oh my god it’s happening. everyone stay CALM" while another fan wrote, "Hot damn, this looks really cool!"
A fan noted that a man featured in the teaser was Hanks’ character asking, "Is that Colonel Parker approaching Elvis in shadow? What a mood! Can’t wait!"
Besides Butler and Hanks, the movie will also star Olivia DeJonge as the singer's wife Priscilla Presley and Yola Quartey as Sister Rosetta Tharpe.
The movie was originally announced in 2014 but there was no further development. In March 2019, Hanks was roped in for playing Parker's character and British screenwriter Kelly Marcel was replaced by writers Sam Bromell and Craig Pearce.
In July 2019, Butler got the lead role while many others including Ansel Elgort, Miles Teller, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Harry Styles auditioned for the role.
Besides the upcoming biopic, Luhrmann has previously directed, "The Great Gatsby" featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton and Elizabeth Debicki.
Butler, on the other hand, is currently filming a miniseries, "Masters of the Air," which is slated to release next year.
