Emma Thompson Slams Body-Shaming In Hollywood; 8 Celebrities Who Have Opened Up About Eating Disorders
Celebrities are often criticized for how their bodies look, and actress Emma Thompson is speaking out against the body-shaming that often goes on.
While appearing on Swedish talk show “Skavlan,” Thompson, who recently returned to movie screens as Mrs. Potts in Disney’s widely successful live-action “Beauty and the Beast” remake, revealed that the industry tends to lead to some actresses “never eating,” and she also admitted she once stood up for a co-star who was told to lose weight.
“There was a wonderful actress in a film I did called ‘Brideshead Revisted,’ and the producer said to her, ‘Would you lose some weight?’ And she was exquisite,” she said. “If you speak to her about this again on any level I will leave this picture. You are never to do that.”
“...The anorexia, there’s so many kids, girls and boys now, and actresses who are very, very thin into their 30s, who simply don’t eat,” she added. “They don’t eat! Sometimes there are just some subjects that you absolutely have to make noise about because it’s so tedious and it’s gone on and on.”
Thompson’s comments are among the few which have been spoken regarding eating disorders in Hollywood. According to NEDA (National Eating Disorders Association), 30 million men and women in America will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives, yet large percentages of the population go unreported and without treatment.
Some have been open about their own experiences with eating disorders in the past. Here are 8 celebrities who have admitted to their own struggles.
