Emmy Nominations 2020 Predictions: 5 Shows That Deserve Attention

The 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards nominations will be announced on Tuesday, and several shows that kept viewers glued to the screens during the coronavirus pandemic lockdown have been predicted to be on the list.

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences will recognize the best drama, comedy and documentary that were broadcast between June 2019 and the end of May 2020. Several heavyweights such as “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Better Call Saul” and “Big Little Lies” are in the running this year and could garner multiple nominations. Amazon's "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel," Netflix's "The Crown" and PopTV's "Schitt's Creek" are expected to get nods as well.

And since favorites like “Game of Thrones,” “Chernobyl” and “Fleabag” have ended, newcomers could get a chance to shine this year. The Academy has also extended the number of comedy and drama nominees to eight slots from its usual seven.

Here are five shows that could grab attention this time.

"The Morning Show"

“The Morning Show,” Apple TV Plus’ flagship show starring Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston, could land a nomination in the outstanding drama series category.

The show has been a favorite in the awards circuit, having been nominated for three Golden Globes – best TV drama and best performance by an actress for Aniston and Witherspoon. It also won the Critics’ Choice Television Award for best supporting actor in a drama series.

"Watchmen"

"Watchmen" is HBO's provocative adaptation of the classic graphic novel by writer Alan Moore and artist Dave Gibbons and depicts issues such as fascism and racism.

The HBO show could get a nomination in the outstanding limited series category, in addition to Regina King and Jeremy Irons getting nods in the outstanding lead actress and actor in a limited series or movie categories.

"Never Have I Ever"

Netflix’s “Never Have I Ever” may also garner a nod in the outstanding comedy series category. The show is inspired by actor-producer Mindy Kaling’s own childhood and focuses on the life of a first-generation Indian American teenage girl.

"Tiger King"

Netflix’s "Tiger King" was one of the first shows that became a hit during the coronavirus pandemic lockdown. The true crime documentary miniseries, which showcased the feud between Joe Exotic and Carole Baskin, could win a nomination in the documentary category.

"Mrs. America"

Another possible nominee for the limited series category is “Mrs. America,” which showcases conservative activist Phyllis Schlafly's fight against the Equal Rights Amendment movement in the 1970s. The show stars Cate Blanchett, who could be nominated in the lead actress in a limited series or movie category.

The winners of this year’s Emmys will be revealed live on Sept. 20 in a ceremony hosted by Jimmy Kimmel at the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles. This will be the late-night host's third time hosting the awards ceremony.
