'The Emoji Movie' Lost Its Zero Percent Rotten Tomatoes Score
"The Emoji Movie" succeeded from its zero percent score on Rotten Tomatoes Friday after one reviewer gave the film a certified-fresh review, bumping its score up to 3 percent.
Betsy Bozdech is the first critic to give the movie a positive review. The reviewer responsible for the boosted score hails from Common Sense Media, claiming the 3D computer-animated comedy flick "isn’t bad, but it isn’t great, either. It’s 'meh.'"

Common Sense Media aims to educate parents with quality reviews on the latest media and technology arrivals. The review on the Sony-Columbia Pictures collaboration evaluates the movie's educational value, positive messages, positive role models and language, among other factors. Bozdech came to the conclusion that the film's overall message "emphasizes the importance of being true to yourself, as well as the value of honesty and teamwork."
Bozdech also cited the movie's protagonist Gene, voiced by "Silicon Valley" alum T.J. Miller, as a good role model for children viewers.
"Gene starts out desperate to fit in and do what he's 'supposed' to do, but he learns that his ability to be many things is what makes him special — and he can be useful by being himself," she wrote. "Gene's parents love him, but at first they're also a bit embarrassed by him and his differences. They learn to love him — and themselves — unconditionally."
"The Emoji Movie" has welcomed overwhelmingly negative reviewers from film critics who've had the chance to view the animated feature prior to its release. Rotten Tomatoes currently showcases 31 reviews for the film, with one only giving it positive feedback — 13 of those reviews come from top critics from media outlets like the Associated Press and the Los Angeles Times. However, "The Emoji Movie" debuted Friday, which means the film's score on Rotten Tomatoes will likely improve as more reviews are expected to emerge after the weekend's up.
Reviews of "The Emoji Movie" on Metacritic speak to a similar tune as Rotten Tomatoes, claiming the website's 19 reviews show an "overwhelming dislike" for the Miller-led flick.

"Beneath its trippy surface lurks an insidious philosophy hazardous to impressionable minds," a top critic from Time Out wrote about the animated flick. The New York Times also gave the movie a dismal review, claiming "the whole thing remains nakedly idiotic."
"The Emoji Movie" tells the story of the hidden world of emojis who reside in the world Textopolis, hoping to be selected for use by cell phone users. Gene (Miller) begins to exhibit emotions outside his designated "meh" emoji expression, making for a journey of self-discovery and eventual acceptance from other emojis by the flick's conclusion.
Miller stars alongside Anna Farris, James Corden, Patrick Stewart, Maya Rudolph and Sofia Vergara, among other stars. Mike White, who boasts writing and acting credits for films like Jack Black's "School of Rock," received writing credits along with Tony Leondis and Eric Siegel. Leondis also directed the animated feature.
"The Emoji Movie" is set to open Friday alongside Charlize Theron's "Atomic Blonde," which currently holds a 74 percent on Rotten Tomatoes from 124 reviews. The Hollywood Reporter claims that "The Emoji Movie" will most likely be a top competitor for "Dunkirk," fighting to earn the No. 1 slot at this weekend's box office.
