‘Empire’ Spoilers: Where Did Season 2 Leave Off? Finale Recap Ahead Of Season 3 Premiere
A lot happened during Season 2 of Fox’s “Empire,” leading up to a crazy and deadly finale. The hip-hop drama is set to return for Season 3 with all new episodes, drama and jaw-dropping moments on Wednesday.
When the show ended last season, fans were left wondering whether Lucious (Terrence Howard) or Andre (Trai Byers) was about to become a widower after one of their wives went tumbling over the side of a building. The answer as to who died — either Anika (Grace Gealey) or Rhonda (Kaitlin Doubleday) — will be answered early on in Season 3. Before “Empire” returns to our TV screens, take a look back at everything that happened with the Lyon family.
Lucious
Lucious is a married man. In Season 2, episode 18 fans saw him wed Anika. Their wedding was definitely surprising, but in true Lucious fashion it was a strategic movie to keep Anika from testifying against him to the feds. Lucious and Anika, who were previously engaged, definitely aren’t in love with each other but understand their marriage was something that needed to be done. Unfortunately, Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) didn’t see it that way and got really upset after Lucious and Anika tied the knot.
Cookie
Speaking of Cookie, she did make some small strides in the Season 2 finale with Anika. At one point, Anika was considering suicide but Cookie was the one who stopped her, reminding Anika that she’s a part of the Lyon family now and pregnant. It was a sweet moment between Cookie and Anika, who spend much of last season stabbing each other in the back. But will Cookie be able to come to terms with Anika becoming Mrs. Lucious Lyon?
Jamal
Jamal recovered pretty well after being shot, and was released from the hospital three weeks after the incident. His family welcomed him home, but Jamal vowed that he was done with music because he was tired of the drama. He told his parents and siblings that he wasn’t going to sing at Hakeem’s (Bryshere Y. Gray) wedding — or ever again for that matter — because he was tired of the chaos and people getting hurt. However, Jamal did end up recording a song for his brother’s wedding after Lucious convinced Freda Gatz (Bre-Z), who’s in prison, to give him a verse.
Hakeem
Playboy Hakeem got his heart broken during the Season 2 finale. The youngest of the Lyon brothers spent Seasons 1 and 2 going from girl to girl to girl, but fell in love with Laura (Jamila Velazquez). The two were all set to get married, but after Shyne (Xzibit) got into a fight at Hakeem and Laura’s wedding, she decided that the Lyon’s lifestyle wasn’t what she wanted and called off the nuptials. Hakeem was left devastated.
Andre
There’s a sad chance Andre’s world is about to be turned upside down again. After losing his son, Andre witnessed either his wife Rhonda or his step-mother Anika falling to her death. Season 2 ended with the camera panning to Andre’s horrified face as one of the ladies fell over the side of the building.
“Empire” Season 3 returns Sept. 21 at 9 p.m. EDT on Fox.
