A Trump running for an elective local government seat in solid Blue New York City that hates the president?

Lara Lea Yunaska Trump, wife of Eric Trump, may be groomed to run for a congressional seat to be left vacant by Republican Peter King after a new poll surprisingly showed her winning King’s seat by more than 30 points in a hypothetical Republican primary. This result was unexpected.

The poll was conducted this month and paid for by the Club for Growth, a right-wing organization whose policy goals include cutting income tax rates, repealing the estate tax, supporting limited government and entitlement reform, among others. It also opposes government action to curb greenhouse gas emissions.

The Club for Growth, however, opposed Trump's presidential bid in 2016 and the reason why it's prodding Lara Trump to run for office remains a mystery.

On November 11, King said he won't seek re-election in 2020 and will retire after his current term expires. He's represented New York's second congressional district since 2013. The district is a South Shore Long Island district that includes parts of Nassau County and Suffolk County.

An avid triathlete and mother of two, Lara Trump is the producer and host of Trump Productions' "Real News Update." She has no previous elective political experience but is a senior adviser on the president’s 2020 re-election campaign.

She and Eric were married in 2014. Lara hails from North Carolina but now lives in Manhattan with her family.

“Among Republican voters, Trump is still a magic name,” said King, noted The New York Times. “I’ve been with Don Jr. several times on Long Island. Was with Lara once at a fund-raising event. She handles herself very well. She’s good with people.”

Lara welcomed the endorsement from the Club for Growth, however. She said she's “incredibly honored” by the results of the poll but is uninterested in running.

“While I would never close the door on anything in the future, right now I am focused on winning a second term for President Trump,” said Lara.

Political analysts believe Lara's hesitation might have something to do with Blue New York becoming even bluer with Democrats now outnumbering Republicans among registered voters in the city. Dems have also made huge gains in the voter rich Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

There's also the almost violent reaction to the Trump name among Democrats, a factor King admitted.

“There’s real solid support and real solid opposition” to the president, said King of his district. “A tremendous amount of anti-Trump energy.”

“At the very least it would be very competitive," said King of a Lara Trump candidacy.
