Escaped Grizzly Cub Roams Florida Neighborhood
A pet grizzly cub escaped from its home in Naples, Fla., on Tuesday afternoon, and it has been seen roaming the area.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said it is searching for the 125-pound cub and warned that residents shouldn't approach the bear if they see it, as it may be traveling in search of food, according to ABC News.
Anyone who sees the bear is advised to contact the proper authorities with details on the direction in which the bear is traveling, according to the Associated Press.
“Residents should remain calm, but pay attention to their surroundings,” said Wildlife supervisor Capt. Mitts Mravic.
“If you see the bear, please do not approach it. Get indoors if you can, and call the Fish and Wildlife Commission or local law enforcement.”
The bear is one of three owned by Dexter Osborn who runs an educational show called “A Grizzly Experience.” He travels with the bears to festivals, fairs and sport shows, his website said.
The bears live on a two-acre expanse on a ranch in Golden Gate Estates.
Some reports noted that black bears live in the area, but the grizzly cub is brown.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said it is also investigating the cause of the escape.
