Europa League: Marcus Rojo To Leave Manchester United? Here's What Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Said
Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has indicated that he wants defender Marcus Roja to stay at the Theatre of Dreams.
Solskjaer spoke to media after Man Utd defeated Partizan Belgrade 3-0 to qualify for the knockout stage in the Europa League on Thursday.
Roja, who has just 26 caps for Man Utd since the 2017-18 season due to several injuries and was expected to be sold in the summer, impressed the Norwegian boss with his performance against Partizan.
Solskjaer mentioned that he was very much impressed with the defender's training sessions. He also said Roja was a popular figure in the Man Utd dressing room and called the 29-year-old Argentine a "top-quality footballer."
"I thought he was excellent tonight. I think he’s been excellent since we started pre-season. He’s played maybe more than he expected but that’s why he’s still here. He’s a top-quality footballer. He’s a winner, good mentality, he can pass, he can defend. It’s now about keeping him fit and he’s been fit now for a long, long time and you can see his qualities," Solskjaer heaped praise at Roja after Man Utd's Europa match.
When asked about the chances of Roja leaving the club in January, Solskjaer said, "You know he’s got such a big heart and such a passion for football and he’s a winner. To have him around when he’s fit and in a good mood, a good form has been great for us. The boys love him, he spreads fear in training sometimes because he tackles properly."
"He’s one of the ones who really, really care about this game. I think he’s taking his opportunities every time he’s played. He did it against Liverpool… fantastic, he wasn’t happy he didn’t play against Bournemouth of course, but he played well tonight."
Man Utd's next fixture is scheduled at home against Brighton in the Premier League. With four losses, three wins and four draws in 11 games, the former champions are currently placed 10th on the points table and will be desperate to collect crucial three points this Sunday.
