Ewan McGregor Talks About Racial Abuse Faced By His Co-Star Moses Ingram [Watch]
Ewan McGregor's co-star Moses Ingram, who worked in the Disney+ series "Obi-Wan Kenobi" as Reva Sevander a.k.a. Third Sister, has been receiving racial abuse online for her portrayal in the "Star Wars" franchise. McGregor took to Twitter on Tuesday to share a message addressing the same.
The 51-year-old actor posted a one-minute, 10 seconds video on Star Wars' official Twitter handle and first thanked his fans for making the series a success.
"This weekend, ‘Star Wars’ fans made ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ the most-watched Disney+ original series premiere of all time," McGregor said. "For that, I would say a big thank you, and it just goes to show what this family can do when we all pull together."
He went on to address the racial abuse his co-star has been facing online.
"However, it seems that some of the fan base has decided to attack Moses Ingram online and send her the most horrendous, racist [direct messages]," McGregor added. "I heard some of them this morning, and it just broke my heart."
McGregor went on to praise the 29-year-old actress for being talented as an actor, who is "absolutely amazing in this series" and "brings so much to the series." He also said, "She is a brilliant woman," before sharing how it "sickened" him to learn that this is happening to her.
"I just want to say as the lead actor in the series, as the executive producer on the series, that we stand with Moses," he concluded. "We love Moses. And if you’re sending her bullying messages, you’re no ‘Star Wars’ fan in my mind. There’s no place for racism in this world. And I totally stand with Moses."
Ingram made her debut on "Obi-Wan Kenobi" last Friday when the online bullying began. The actress took to her Instagram Stories to share the direct messages she received on the social media platform.
"You’re a diversity hire and you won’t be loved or remembered for this acting role," was one of the hateful comments she received.
She also posted a video of herself explaining, "There’s nothing anybody can do about this. What bothers me is that there’s this feeling that I should shut up and take it… And I’m not built like that."
A fan shared the Instagram Story on Twitter:
"Obi-Wan Kenobi" is a six-part limited series that premiered on Disney+. The first two episodes were dropped on May 27, while the remaining will release in the following weeks. The finale of the series is slated to release on June 22.
