KEY POINTS
- John Ozbilgen, revealed he murdered Stephanie Parze in a suicide note
- He was initially arrested for her assault and the possession of child ponography later on
- He was never charged for her murder because he committed suicide days after his arrest
Stephanie Parze, 25, vanished after spending time with her friends and family on the night before Halloween, and police investigations into her disappearance quickly pointed to her ex-boyfriend.
Her ex-boyfriend, John Ozbilgen, 29, had an ongoing relationship with Stephanie. Just a month before her death, he had been accused and arrested for assaulting her.
On October 30th, Ms. Parze visited her parents and went home afterward.
The following day she did not go to her babysitting job and stopped responding to calls and texts.
When investigators went to her home in Freehold Township, her car was in the driveway, her phone on the couch, and her dog inside the house.
The search for Ms. Stephanie done by police and her family covered hundreds of acres in Freehold, all the way to Staten Island.
Investigators searched Ozbilgen's New Jersey home and uncovered his three domestic violence charges, including the one Ms. Parze had filed.
She said that Ozbilgen had assaulted her, hitting her hand, and slapped her head with his backhand and was worried about being assaulted again by him.
Ozbilgen had also sent Stephanie angry profane text messages a day before Stephanie was last seen alive.
In their investigations, police found an image of child pornography in Ozbilgen's phone, arrested him, and charged him on November 8th with possession of child pornography.
On November 19th, Ozbilgen was released as prosecutors said that he was a person of interest in Stephanie's disappearance case, only to be discovered dead, three days later in his home.
The authorities' suspicions were validated on November 22nd when Mr. Ozbilgen committed suicide, leaving a note that confesses involvement in Stephanie's death.
Prosecutor Christopher J Gramiccioni said Ozbilgen was responsible for Stephanie's murder after her body surfaced on Sunday.
The discovery of Stephanie's body brought an end to an intensive search for her over the months, and Stephanie's father, Ed, was thankful to the police and community for their efforts.
He and his wife Sharleen were grateful their daughter's body would finally come home.
In his suicide note, he said that he could not do life in prison, and told his parents that what they will hear about him is true except for the child pornography charges.
Rick Incremona, the lawyer for the Ozbilgen family, confirmed that a note had been left.
The suicide note hasn't been shared publicly as its still part of an ongoing investigation.
Officially, John was never charged with the murder of Stephanie, and authorities think he acted alone.
Ms. Parze's body was found by two boys on Sunday afternoon along Route 9 in Old Bridge in a wooded area, a spot close to where the police had previously searched.
