The wife of a former National Football League (NFL) quarterback was arrested after she allegedly plotted and carried out a plan to steal hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of designer items from her boss.
Christina McNown was charged with four counts of felony grand theft following an investigation that revealed she had allegedly stolen valuable items from her boss, philanthropist and film producer Sydney Holland, back in October, TMZ reported, citing law enforcement sources.
McNown, who is the wife of former Chicago Bears quarterback Cade McNown, "lifted" items such as purses, clothing and jewelry from Holland, according to The New York Post.
Christina had easy access to Holland's personal belongings as she had been her employer's trusted assistant and stylist for 12 years, sources said.
Holland was reportedly able to notice that some of her items had gone missing in the months before she determined Christina was the culprit. Additionally, she discovered that some of the stolen items were listed for sale online.
Christina was later arrested and her arraignment was scheduled for February. She reportedly continues to promote herself as a stylist on social media and through her website.
In a similar story, a receptionist in Ireland was sentenced to prison after she stole money from her employer for nearly 20 years.
Anita Gallagher had stolen €55,000 ($62,105) from her boss, Dr. John Peters, while she worked for his practice at the Littlepace Medical Centre between 2001 and 2019. She had regularly stolen the €60 ($70) fee private patients paid and raked in an average of €6,000 ($9,035) a year from 2013 to 2019.
Gallagher's offending behavior allegedly often increased while Peters' wife, the practice manager, was away for prolonged periods.
Peters later discovered Gallagher's theft and confronted her in 2019. Gallagher, who resigned in September of that year, confessed and apologized, but she asked for her family to not be informed of her actions.
Gallagher's marriage of 28 years broke down when police called her home in June 2020 to arrest her following Peters' reports of the thefts. She later pleaded guilty in Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to eight sample charges of stealing from the practice between January 2013 and August 2019.
Judge Melanie Greally said Gallagher's actions were "motivated by basic greed and opportunism" as she was under "no financial pressure" to steal from her employer. The magistrate also noted that Gallagher "only stopped once she was detected."
Greally initially set a headline sentence of three and a half years for Gallagher, but she reduced it by one year after taking into account mitigation. She also suspended the final 15 months of the sentence on the condition that Gallagher would keep the peace for that period.
