Watkins appeared on the sixth season of Fox's hit culinary competition for kids. He was only 11 years old at the time when he vied to win the $100,000 grand prize. He placed in the top 18.
When his parents were still alive, Watkins helped them with their family's restaurant which was named after him - Big Ben's Bodacious Barbecue, Bakery & Deli. However, it was shut down the month his parents died, Today reported.
On July 25, his uncle Trent McCain updated the GoFundMe page #Love4Ben, which was started in 2017 to help Watkins after he lost his parents. The update revealed that he was diagnosed with a rare disease.
"Shortly after his 13th birthday, Ben was diagnosed with a rare illness called Angiomatoid Fibrous Histiocytoma, a soft tissue tumor usually in children and young adults. Young Ben is one of only six people in the entire world diagnosed with this illness. Ben is currently undergoing treatment at Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago," McCain wrote.
On Thursday, McCain updated Watkins' supporters that they already reached their 25% goal and thanked the people for their generosity while informing them that he just started chemotherapy.
Three days after Watkins' first chemotherapy, McCain said they already reached their initial goal.
"Due to the generosity of over 3,200 donors, we've surpassed the $100,000 mark! Thank you so very much for your #Love4Ben!" he wrote.
