‘The Exorcist’ Season 2: Father Marcus, Father Tomas Dynamic Teased By Execs
“The Exorcist” Season 2 premiered on Friday night and introduced a slew of new characters. But two others from Season 1 remained constant in the show.
Father Marcus (Ben Daniels) and Father Tomas (Alfonso Herrera) are back, and they will be dealing with the exorcism of at least one of the children at Andy's (John Cho) foster home. While speaking with Collider, executive producers Jeremy Slater and Sean Crouch explained the dynamic between the two characters and how different or similar it will be from Season 1.
“It will feel more like last season than any episode, up until that point. I think you’ll get that tone back, a little bit. We’re playing with the tone in the first three episodes. I think it’s gonna be a highly anticipated meeting, once the A story is together. I just watched a cut of it, and the show feels whole, the moment everything comes together. You’re like, ‘OK, now act two begins,’” Crouch explained.
Unlike Season 1, Season 2 will focus on the possession of a child. According to Crouch, this is more terrifying than the possession of the Rance family since kids are regarded as innocent individuals.
“What makes possession stories powerful is that they’re usually a corruption of the innocent, and children are innocent, to some degree. They’re helpless and they can’t defend themselves in a way that an adult character can. It’s a good dramatic shorthand. Putting a kid in danger is always going to tug at your heartstrings a little bit more than putting a grown-ass adult in danger,” Slater added.
In the premiere episode, titled “Janus,” Cindy (Zibby Allen) was possessed by the demon. She lost a child and struggled with moving on from her baby’s death. Elsewhere, a group of foster kids led by Verity (Brianna Hildebrand) was also introduced. She and her friends have very different personalities.
Caleb (Hunter Dillon), who is blind, got really upset when his dad failed to attend his custody hearing that morning. He takes some time for himself, but ends up disappearing. Andy finds him on top of the well about to jump, but he saved him. It was revealed that he was also possessed.
“The Exorcist” Season 2 airs Fridays at 9 p.m. EDT on Fox.
