- Experts revealed the reason behind this phenomenon
Many people would like to live longer. After all, this would mean that they would be able to spend more years with their loved ones. However, there are factors that contribute to longevity. Some of these factors include diet, lifestyle, age, and even sex.
A recent study revealed that between men and women, the latter have a higher chance of living longer. Now you may be asking why. Luckily, these health experts have the answer.
Men vs. Women Chromosomes
According to health experts, the male chromosome carries XY, while the female chromosome carries XX. According to the Biology Letters journal, the extra X in the woman chromosome provides a certain type of cellular structure, which protects against sickness and gene mutation.
As per the study, the other X serves as a buffer against possible diseases. This is also backed by the study, which showed that women live 21% longer than men.
The researchers stated, "These findings are a crucial step in uncovering the underlying mechanisms affecting longevity, which could point to pathways for extending life."
A study conducted by the scientists from the University of New South Wales looked into the sex chromosomes of 229 species. They zeroed in on the lifespan of these species, which included mammals and fish.
The Result Of the Findings
As per the study, they found that those species that have two same chromosomes lived a bit longer. For instance, birds with two Z chromosomes lived 18% longer. In another study, there are some male species that carry 2 of the same sex genes. It revealed that the males in these species lived by 7% longer compared to their female counterparts.
According to the World Health Organization, it recognized the "inherent biological advantage for females." Because of this advantage, women tend to live longer than men. Worldwide, women live an average of 6 to 8 years longer than men. In addition, women also have lower mortality rates at all ages when compared to men.
More Lifestyle Tips
Aside from the chromosomes, keeping oneself physically active could help you live longer. Eating a balanced diet also contributes to a healthy life and longer life expectancy.
