Multiple heat-related advisories and warnings have been issued across three states, with the National Weather Service (NWS) warning of a "prolonged and potentially dangerous heat wave" that is expected to extend in much of the western U.S.

The agency also projected possible flash flooding from Texas into Lower Mississippi Valley through the weekend.

There is a "prolonged and possibly record heat wave building over the Western U.S." as the country heads "into the upcoming holiday weekend," the Weather Prediction Center (WPC) said in its three-day forecast from Friday through Sunday.

Temperatures are expected to soar to the upper 90s to low 100s in the Northern High Plains of Montana and the Northern Rockies on Saturday.

The heat warnings and advisories issued for states are as follows:

  • Portions of south central and southeast Washington

Heat Advisory effective from Friday through Sunday evening

  • Northeast and southeast Oregon
  • Portions of southwest and west central Idaho

Heat Advisory effective from Saturday through Sunday evening

  • Northern Elko County, Northern Lander County, Humboldt County, South-Central Elko County, Southwestern Elko County, Northern Eureka County - Nevada

Excessive Heat Warning effective from Friday through Monday evening

  • The Grand Canyon below 4,000 feet - Arizona

Excessive Heat Warning effective from Friday through Monday evening

  • Southeastern Elko County - Nevada

Heat Advisory effective from Saturday morning through Monday evening

  • Catalina and Santa Barbara Islands, Los Angeles County Beaches, Ventura County Beaches and Malibu Coast – California

  • Santa Barbara County Inland Central Coast and San Luis Obispo County - California

Excessive Heat Warning effective from Friday through Monday evening

  • Santa Barbara County (southwestern and southeastern Coast) – Los Angeles, California

  • Northern San Joaquin Valley, Sacramento Valley and Delta – Sacramento, California

Excessive Heat Warning effective from Friday through Wednesday

  • San Joaquin Valley, Lower Sierra Nevada Foothills, Mojave Desert and Slopes, Indian Wells Valley, Kern River Valley, Coastal Range and Yosemite Valley – California

Excessive Heat Warning effective from Friday through Wednesday evening

  • South End of the Lower Sierra, Fresno-Tulare Lower Sierra and Mariposa-Madera Lower Sierra - California

The NWS also noted that "widespread showers and storms" are expected from the east of Texas through the Lower Mississippi Valley going into the Southeast through Saturday. Due to the said storms, the NWS expects "the risk of flash flooding" from Friday through Saturday.
