KEY POINTS

- Even before moving in, Hamilton reportedly has annoyed his neighbors
- The start of the F1 2020 season has been delayed due to the coronavirus crisis
Lewis Hamilton reportedly has contacted builders in regards to upgrading his $21 million mansion in London he allegedly has “never set foot in”. The reigning F1 champion wants to add a rear extension with a stone terrace and pergola to his six-bedroom house.
Hamilton, who is in the final year of a $45m-a-season contract with Mercedes, bought the property from Burberry chief designer Christopher Bailey in 2017. According to reports, the F1 racer has managed to anger his neighbors despite not moving in yet. His neighbors include the renowned artist, David Hockney.
Hockney along with a group of other painters, who use a nearby studio, previously mentioned that Hamilton’s upgrades work will surely impact their work.
“As the owners of these Grade II listed buildings and as working artists who depend on natural daylight, our working and living conditions would be seriously disturbed by the plan as currently described,” the painters told The Sun.
The reports further stated that despite the complaints from the neighbors, Hamilton has decided to go ahead with the upgrade work after his plans were approved by the local authorities just recently. Hamilton submitted his plan in January that stated the F1 champion was also looking to renovate the front of the building with a new porch.
His plans of building a summer house were destroyed after his neighbors complained, "The current owner bought the property for $21m in 2017 and has never set foot in it.”
Hamilton, who is anyway going forward with his upgrading plans, has a lot of time in hands at the moment as the F1 2020 season has not begun yet due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic crisis.
The Briton, who clinched his sixth driver’s title last season, is looking to equal Michael Schumacher’s all-time record of seven world titles.
